Dayton vs George Washington College Basketball Betting Preview
Dayton Basketball
Dayton is in the midst of a four-game hot streak, with each win coming by double digits. Anthony Grant’s squad is now 19-9 on the season with a 10-5 record in conference play.
The Flyers secured their best win of the season on Tuesday night at home, defeating a really good Saint Louis team, 77-62. Amael L'Etang had his way on the inside in the win, going for a career-high 26 points to go along with 10 rebounds. The skilled big man has really come on as of late as a guy they can play through.
Senior point guard Javon Bennett is the heartbeat of the team, though, barely leaving the floor and making things happen with his speed and shotmaking.
Dayton excels in two particular categories the most. The Flyers are No. 1 in the entire country in free-throw attempt rate and seventh nationally in defensive turnover rate. This Flyers defense is 43rd in efficiency, per KenPom, and is very opportunistic, stacking up steals and blocks.
This group has struggled a bit on the glass this season, even with the strong play of late from L’Etang with back-to-back double-doubles. Dayton ranks 13th in offensive rebounding rate in the Atlantic 10 and 11th in defensive rebounding rate.
The Flyers were on a four-game road losing streak until they defeated George Mason by 15 in Fairfax last Wednesday.
George Washington Basketball
The Revolutionaries are trending in the right direction in year four under Chris Caputo. They're 16-12 overall, but also just 7-8 in league play. This team is much better than that conference record, however, with some really close losses to good teams.
To accurately assess this George Washington team, it must be taken into account that the availability of star big man Rafael Castro. Castro returned to action in Tuesday’s blowout win over La Salle with 16 points and seven rebounds in 24 minutes.
He missed six games before that, though, and the Revolutionaries went 2-4 in that stretch. Castro does everything for this team, averaging 16 points, six boards and a ridiculous 3.4 stocks per game.
Castro transferred down from Providence, and George Washington’s other big man — Luke Hunger — transferred down from Northwestern. Hunger has really hit a stride lately, scoring 20 or more points in four straight games.
With those two bigs leading the way, this is a really good offensive team. They check in at 48th nationally on KenPom in offensive efficiency and top-30 in both offensive rebounding rate and 2-point field goal percentage.
This team is also shooting a strong 36% from deep on the season, with the No. 1 3-point attempt rate in the league.
Defense has been more of a struggle. The Revs come in at 164th in defensive efficiency on KenPom, which is 10th in the Atlantic 10.
Dayton vs. George Washington Betting Analysis
When these teams met at Dayton nearly two months ago, the Flyers pulled ahead late and were able to win by seven. Castro and Hunger were limited, combining for just 10 points. George Washington turned the ball over 22 times against this ferocious Dayton defense, and the Revolutionaries shot just 60% from the free-throw line.
At home, with Castro motivated and healthy and Hunger a different player in this system, I expect that duo to show up completely differently in this game. I trust Caputo to have his guys much more prepared to make adjustments to handle the aggressive Flyers defense and take better care of the basketball playing on their home court.
It’s also a tough spot for Dayton, as it's traveling and looking for a season sweep coming off the emotional high of its best win of the season.
I’ll lay the points with George Washington, as I think it picks up a big-time home win here.
My Pick: George Washington -3.5 (Play to -4.5)
