Florida vs Texas College Basketball Betting Preview
Florida Basketball
Florida comes into this matchup at 21-6 overall and 12-2 in the SEC.
Since its home loss to Auburn on January 24, Florida is 7-0 and is the No. 1 team in the country, via Bart Torvik. During their seven-game win streak, the Gators are holding teams to 41.7% on 2-pointers and 28.5% on 3s.
Offensively, the Gators are deadly in transition. Not only are they efficient in transition, averaging 1.165 points per possession on 61% from the field, but they often rebound their missed shots.
Against Ole Miss, Florida scored on seven of its 11 transition possessions and got an offensive rebound on three of the four misses. The only possession in transition that didn't result in a bucket or an offensive rebound was Boogie Fland's deep 3-point attempt right before halftime.
Thomas Haugh continues to be a consistent scorer for this team, averaging 17 points per game. The one element of Haugh's game that's underrated is his ability to spread out a defense with his outside shooting.
Opponents are sending double teams to Florida's bigs when they catch the ball in the paint, or when their guards drive inside the paint, which allows Haugh to relocate behind the 3-point line for open looks.
Not to be a jinx, but Haugh had made at least one 3-pointer in 22 straight games.
Texas Basketball
Texas sits at 17-10 overall and 8-6 in the SEC after its loss at Georgia, which snapped a season-best five-game winning streak.
On the season, the Longhorns rank sixth in offensive efficiency, thanks to shooting 56.9% from 2 and an SEC-best 36.6% from 3.
What makes the Texas offense tough to guard is its ability to use Dailyn Swain as a ball-dominant guard at his size. Swain has had two or more assists in nine straight games while averaging 22.1 points, due in large part to his ability as the primary ball-handler.
With Swain as the primary ball-handler off the pick-and-roll, Texas' offense can be at its best. On the season, 27.9% of Swain's shots have come off that action, shooting 46-of-90 (51.1%).
Another area where Swain has proven very efficient, though the sample size is small, is isolation possessions. On the season, he's scored on 20 of 29 iso possessions, putting him in the 100th percentile while averaging a ridiculous 1.641 points per possession.
Florida vs. Texas Betting Analysis
This game is going to be a good one. Sean Miller has his team playing at a high level offensively, and this is its biggest test yet, especially with Florida being the best defensive team in the country since its loss to Auburn.
Texas is 5-1 in its last six games thanks to its offensive efficiency; however, its defense ranks 179th during the same span, and Florida will take advantage of that.
Florida will push the pace in this game, as it has all season. The Gators are averaging 1.165 points per possession in transition, and are facing a Texas defense that's in the 18th percentile in transition defense (1.118 PPP allowed).
The Longhorns will continue to play through Swain, but at the end of the day, Florida's physicality in the frontcourt will tire Texas, leading to easier transition buckets for the Gators on the offensive end.
My Pick: Florida -6 (Play to -7.5)
