Georgia Tech vs Duke College Basketball Betting Preview

Georgia Tech Basketball

Georgia Tech awaits a challenging test in Durham against a top-five caliber Duke squad. The Yellow Jackets are playing their best basketball of the season, winning four straight games while scoring 87+ points in three of the four.

I don't buy into Georgia Tech suddenly turning into a good offensive team, as it ranks 187th in offensive efficiency.

Shooting is a real problem for Georgia Tech's offense. From a percentage standpoint, hitting 35% from deep is above the national average. The issue is more from an attempt standpoint, as just 31% of the Yellow Jackets' shots are 3s.

Four of the five starters for Georgia Tech make less than one trey per game (Lamar Washington, Baye Ndongo, Mouhamed Sylla, Akai Fleming). That leaves leading scorer Kowacie Reeves Jr. as the main shooter for Tech, and he drills 40% from deep.

From a pace standpoint, Georgia Tech wants to get out and run, playing at the 63rd-fastest tempo nationally. The Yellow Jackets also have an 18% turnover rate, so they play too fast for their own good at times.

Defense is Georgia Tech's strong suit, as it ranks 94th in defensive efficiency. I feel like it's a bit better than that number says, though.

The Yellow Jackets hold teams to just 29% from deep and 47% from inside the arc. They also have a pair of reliable defensive bigs in Sylla and Ndongo, who have the size and athleticism to limit teams from scoring inside.

Duke Basketball

Duke went into the Christmas break on a bit of a sour note, losing to Texas Tech after holding a double-digit lead late.

This should be a nice spot for the Blue Devils to get back on track, though.

I'm not sure how anybody scores on this Duke team. It ranks fifth in defensive efficiency, including top-10 nationally in both 3-point and 2-point field goal defense.

Not to mention, Duke is one of the tallest teams in America, ranking fifth in average height. Plus, the Blue Devils sit 12th in KenPom's FTA/FGA metric. The combination of length and the lack of fouling is pretty rare, and that's what separates Duke from other elite defensive teams.

Offensively, it's the Cam Boozer show. He leads the nation with 23 points per game and is the clear frontrunner to take home National Player of the Year honors. He also adds 10 rebounds and four assists a night for good measure.

Outside of Boozer, Duke is still trying to establish other scoring options. Boozer is so good that he lifts the Blue Devils' offense to some pretty high highs. However, Isaiah Evans and Patrick Ngongba II are the only other double-digit scorers on the roster.

Evans is about as streaky as it gets, and Ngongba isn't a shooting threat.

Given that the Blue Devils attempt 3s on 47% of their field goals, they'd like to shoot better than 35% from deep. They have the weapons to shoot it, as Dame Sarr, Nik Khamenia and Evans can be marksmen, but none are super consistent.

Georgia Tech vs. Duke Betting Analysis

I'm targeting the under here. I know Georgia Tech plays fast, but Duke's ability to hold teams to bad shots in the half-court could slow the Jackets down.

Plus, the Yellow Jackets' lack of shooting will likely force them to take more 3s, which will likely lead to poor results. Or better yet, maybe Georgia Tech shoots more 2s, which plays right into Duke's hands.

Let's try to simplify this a bit — Duke is laying 25.5 points, so the books expect a blowout (which is a very reasonable outcome given the gap in talent). But that probably projects Duke close to the 90-point range, which I can't see it crossing.

Georgia Tech is good enough defensively to hold Duke to 75-80 points. Conversely, it's hard to picture the Yellow Jackets crossing the 60-65 point marker against one of the top defensive teams the sport has to offer.

My Pick: Under 151.5 (Play to 148)
