Gonzaga vs Alabama College Basketball Betting Preview
Gonzaga Basketball
Is Gonzaga a defensive-first team? Yes, it sounds too crazy to be true, but it is. The Bulldogs are 5-0 and have used the nation's fifth-most efficient defense to get there.
They have three wins over high-major foes and all have come by double-digits, beating Oklahoma by 15, Creighton by 27 and Arizona State by 12. The Zags held each of those opponents to 0.93 PPP or fewer.
While Gonzaga is better defensively, it also has an elite offense.
The Zags rank ninth in offensive efficiency, but they're dominating on that side of the ball in a different way than usual. Old Gonzaga teams could shoot well from deep, but this season's squad uses a 22% turnover rate to get rolling in transition to initiate offense.
That helps make up for Gonzaga drilling just 34% from 3 thus far.
In the half-court, expect a steady diet of post feeds to stud forward Graham Ike and Braden Huff. The physically imposing, 6-foot-9, 250-pound Ike leads the Zags with 17 points and 9.2 rebounds per game and will have to wiggle his way out of double teams in this meeting.
The key for Gonzaga is the guard play. Spanish guard Mario Saint-Supery quickly snagged the starting point guard role from Braeden Smith, who struggled scoring the ball. Mark Few made the right move because Saint-Supery provides a much-needed shooting boost.
Saint-Supery and Adam Miller, the two backcourt starters, will have to shoot well. Miller has always been a streaky shooter, but he's on the bad end of that streakiness right now, as he's hitting just 33% from 3 so far this season.
With Ike, Huff and Tyon Grant-Foster being players that opponents can dare to shoot, that pair needs to provide the floor spacing.
Alabama Basketball
Floor spacing will never be a concern for the Nate Oats-led Crimson Tide, who are off to a 3-1 start with a pair of ranked road wins over St. John's and Illinois.
Alabama will look to get the less agile Gonzaga bigs in space using its highly effective pick-and-rolls.
The Crimson Tide have three high-major games under its belt, and they scored 1.10 PPP or more in each game.
You won't find a team in America with a better group of guards than Alabama.
Labaron Philon Jr. leads the Tide with 20.5 points and 5.8 assists per game. He's one of the best guards in the country and excels at finding mismatches and exploiting them. If a big gets switched onto Philon, you can just automatically add a few points to Bama's tally.
Alabama attempts 52% of its shots from downtown and connects at a 34% clip. It's reasonable to think the Crimson Tide has even more untapped offensive potential once Aden Holloway and Latrell Wrightsell shoot better from deep.
I'm even beginning to buy stock in the Crimson Tide's interior group. Keitenn Bristow made his season debut earlier in the week, and he was awesome. He battled the beefier Illinois interior and outplayed them, scoring 10 points and grabbing eight boards.
It'll be a different test against Ike and Huff, but Bristow looks the part.
Gonzaga vs. Alabama Betting Analysis
Gonzaga is elite defensively — there's no doubt about that. Alabama is a totally different monster than anything the Zags have faced so far, though.
The Bulldogs won each of their games by 12+ points and two games by 50+ points. That's why Gonzaga is third in KenPom. I don't buy into the Zags as the third-best team in America, though.
The Bulldogs had no issues turning over Oklahoma, Arizona State or Creighton. Something has to give, as Alabama turns the ball over just 12% of the time.
Gonzaga has to maintain its elite turnover rate, or prove me wrong with its shooting.
Go with the Tide in an upset.
My Pick: Alabama ML +140
