LIU Basketball

Long Island is going from the constant pressure and never-ending tempo of IU Indianapolis to the deliberate slog that is Air Force. That drastic change of pace should be quite a shock to the Sharks' system.

Is it enough of a shock for Long Island to struggle here? I don't think so.

The Sharks have a lot of talent for a squad in the NEC. Both of their top two players — Malachi Davis and Greg Gordon — are outstanding. Davis is off to a somewhat uneven start, averaging 9.5 points through his first two games of 2025-26. He'll get rolling soon, though, as he averaged 17 points per game last season.

Gordon is stuffing the stat sheet for Long Island. He's a dominant athlete, averaging 20 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game. I'm not sure how the Falcons can keep Gordon off the glass or slow him down, as they simply don't have the athletes to contain him.

Long Island has scored 0.94 and 1.09 points per possession in its first two games, and its offense should be much better than its current 320th ranking in KenPom. The Sharks can shoot, hitting 37% of their attempts from deep, though their volume is low. That volume should increase, especially in this matchup.

The key will be converting at the foul line. They left 12 points at the stripe against Notre Dame and 11 against IU Indianapolis.

Air Force Basketball

Air Force is off to a brutal start to its season. The Falcons took a 16-point road loss to Belmont, followed by a 20-point home loss to Austin Peay.

They're dealing with a very low talent level, largely because they're unable to add transfers.

Head coach Joe Scott runs a Princeton-style offense, but he has very little shooting on his roster.

Freshman guards Ethan Greenberg and Kam Sanders can hit jumpers from deep; the former scored 21 points and drilled six 3s against Austin Peay.

The Falcons get almost no shooting from their forwards, though. Eli Robinson and Caleb Walker start at the three and four, respectively, and neither can shoot. Add in 7-footer Wesley Celichowski, who's 1-for-8 from deep this year, and the scoring load really falls on Greenberg and Sanders.

The absolute worst thing a slow-paced team can do is miss free throws and turn the ball over. Air Force does both.

From a pace standpoint, the Falcons rank 347th in adjusted tempo, relying on constant movement and cuts in their Princeton-style offense.

They also struggle badly in the other two key categories, posting a 32.6% turnover rate and shooting just 45.5% from the foul line — both bottom-10 marks in college basketball.

LIU vs. Air Force Betting Analysis

I truly could see Air Force being one of the worst teams in the country. The only concern in this particular game is whether Long Island eventually struggles with the altitude in Colorado Springs.

But that's exactly why facing IU Indianapolis was the perfect preparation for this matchup. This game will be slower-paced, but the Sharks are used to playing through fatigue.

I'm buying stock in this Long Island squad, as I view it as the team to beat in the NEC. The Sharks' athleticism, talent and ability to dominate the paint will help them snag another road win over a Mountain West opponent.

My Pick: LIU ML -126
