LSU vs Kentucky College Basketball Betting Preview
LSU Basketball
The Tigers have been "awarded" the 16th seed in the SEC Tournament, posting a 15-16 overall record on the season.
Senior guard Max Mackinnon leads the Tigers in scoring this season with over 15 points per contest.
Alongside Mackinnon, Dedan Thomas Jr. is having an impressive season of his own for an LSU backcourt that boasts a ton of experience.
Thomas is undoubtedly the engine of McMahon’s offense, posting upwards of 15 points per game this season, along with nearly seven assists on average. The UNLV transfer runs the point for a Tigers offense scoring 78 points per contest.
LSU’s frontcourt has also excelled on the offensive end of the floor, with both 6-foot-10 forward Mike Nwoko and 6-foot-8 senior Marquell Sutton posting double-figure scoring efforts.
For a Tigers frontcourt featuring impressive size and athleticism, it's shocking how poorly LSU has performed on the defensive end.
McMahon’s defensive unit has been atrocious all year long, allowing nearly 89 points per game. Per KenPom, the Tigers’ defense ranks outside the top 110 nationally in defensive efficiency rating.
While the SEC features some of the most explosive offenses in college basketball — including the likes of Florida, Alabama and Arkansas — the Tigers’ lack of defensive effort this season has been inexcusable.
McMahon will undoubtedly be on the hot seat in the offseason, with his Tigers having failed to receive a single NCAA Tournament bid throughout his four seasons in Baton Rouge.
Kentucky Basketball
In what's been a whirlwind of a season for Mark Pope’s Wildcats, Kentucky finds itself with the ninth seed in the SEC Tournament.
Per ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi, Kentucky is currently projected as a seven-seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Otega Oweh leads Pope’s bunch in scoring this season with over 18 points per game, while also posting nearly five rebounds and three assists on average.
Denzel Aberdeen rounds out a Wildcats starting backcourt that boasts impressive versatility and athleticism. The Florida transfer was one of the premier defenders for Todd Golden’s 2025 championship roster and has thrived in his final collegiate season under Pope.
Aberdeen is posting 13 points per contest and will certainly be a major-impact player if Kentucky is to get hot and make a run in the SEC Tournament.
The Wildcats have some serious depth at the guard position, with Collin Chandler and Jasper Johnson also playing key minutes for Pope.
Kentucky’s offense is scoring over 82 points per game this season and ranks inside the top 40 in the country in offensive efficiency rating, according to Haslametrics.
While the Wildcats have had far better offenses in recent years, their defense has improved substantially in the post-John Calipari era, maintaining a solid +8 scoring margin.
Kentucky’s defensive frontcourt has made major strides over the course of the season, with 7-foot freshman center Malachi Moreno serving as an elite rim protector.
Mouhamed Dioubate has played a vital role in Pope’s interior defense as well, with the junior frequently picking up the top-scoring forwards.
LSU vs. Kentucky Betting Analysis
This is the second meeting of the season between these two teams, with the Wildcats having prevailed by one point on the road in mid-January.
While Kentucky has been rather inconsistent and has battled injuries all season long, it's — by a wide margin — the superior team in this matchup.
While the Wildcats’ first victory against LSU required a major second-half comeback just to win by one point, Pope’s bunch was shorthanded and playing in a tough SEC atmosphere in Baton Rouge.
Kentucky has been far from convincing as of late — dropping five of its last seven contests — but I expect the Wildcats to be very motivated to make a statement on Wednesday.
My Pick: Kentucky -7.5
