Marist vs Quinnipiac College Basketball Betting Preview
Marist Basketball
What an absolute mid-afternoon treat this will be. Marist and Quinnipiac are two of the upper-tier teams in the MAAC this season and both are quite capable of winning the league tournament and capturing the MAAC auto-bid to the Big Dance.
Marist comes in at 8-3. The Red Foxes have looked the part of a conference dark horse early in the season, but they've benefitted from a very soft schedule. John Dunne’s group has defeated teams ranked no higher than 243rd in KenPom’s ratings, with most ranking below 300.
Marist has an elite defense that restricts your ability to get to the rim and forces you out of rhythm and into low percentage 3-point misses. The Red Foxes rank 18th nationally in 3-point defense and 23rd in turnover percentage. Playing this squad makes you uncomfortable offensively.
On the other end of the court, Marist has actually ramped up its pace from what we're accustomed to, as the Foxes rank 224th in adjusted tempo.
This group is headlined by Elijah Lewis, Rhyjon Blackwell and Justin Menard, who each average double figures in scoring. The guard play is strong, but Marist has struggled a bit with uncharacteristic turnovers this season. Thus, cutting down on the careless giveaways will be important against Quinnipiac.
Quinnipiac Basketball
Quinnipiac has an elite MAAC win already under its belt, as the Bobcats blew out Iona on the road. The Bobcats also defeated Pittsburgh and took UCF to the wire.
Jaden Zimmerman and Amarri Monroe are exceptional mid-major scorers, and Quinnipiac has five players averaging double-figure points.
The Bobcats will push the tempo a ton in this game as they look to get quick looks inside. It'll be fun to see how much success Quinnipiac has against the strong Marist transition defense.
Quinnipiac has done well this season when it comes to defending without fouling, which has been a traditional weakness for this team.
Quinnipiac ranks 61st nationally in defensive free-throw rate, which is impressive for an aggressive defense.
The emergence of guys like Spence Wewe and Keith McKnight have added a block and shot-altering presence that should cause problems for Marist offensively.
Marist vs. Quinnipiac Betting Analysis
This line opened up Quinnipiac -3.5 with a total that's already been bet up from 139.5 to 145.5. I like Quinnipiac here.
The Bobcats are really going to challenge Marist on the perimeter with Monroe and Zimmerman. I expect Quinnipiac to attack the Marist interior and have success getting to the rim.
Marist has been weaker this season when it comes in sending its opponents to the foul line, and I expect Quinnipiac to be at the free throw strike a ton.
Dunne’s defense is nasty, and this is going to be a close, hard-fought game.
Incidentally, it might be the Quinnipiac defense that makes the difference here. The Bobcats have been poor when it comes to allowing offensive rebounds, but when they keep their opponent off the glass, they win with an extended margin.
Marist is a weak offensive rebounding team that favors getting back on defense rather than crashing the glass, so I expect minimal second-chance points for the Red Foxes.
The Bobcats have played a stronger schedule and have looked excellent thus far in league play. I like the way this team plays at home, and I expect Quinnipiac to rise up again in this one.
My Pick: Quinnipiac -3.5
