Norfolk State Basketball

Norfolk State has been surging of late and heads into this one having won five in a row in MEAC play.

The Spartans are tied for second place in the MEAC standings with two critical games left in the regular season and MEAC Tournament positioning hanging in the balance.

Norfolk State could secure the No. 1 seed or fall to the four-seed depending on how things go this week against Morgan State and Howard.

The offense is led by Anthony McComb III, who averages 16.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Elijah Jamison scores 14.5 points per game and Devon Ellis chips in 10.6 points a night.

Norfolk State is lacking a true facilitator, so it relies heavily on iso action or getting the ball into the paint.

The Spartans lead the MEAC and are one of the best teams in the country at getting to the foul line.

Norfolk State does apply some defensive pressure and has six players who have accumulated 20 or more steals this season. The Spartans defend the arc well, per MEAC standards, but they can be exposed in the painted area, giving up close looks or trips to the stripe.

The MEAC is a league where most of its games are often foul fests, and Norfolk State sees its fair share of opponent free throw attempts. This is often the result of second-chance opportunities allowed, as the Spartans are a poor defensive rebounding team.

Morgan State Basketball

Morgan State comes in off a loss to Howard on Saturday, but before that, the Bears had won eight of nine games to get themselves tied for second in the current MEAC standings with just two games to play.

The surge was fueled by back-to-back comeback wins against Howard and Norfolk State — the latter saw the Bears down by 10 points with under six minutes remaining before late-game magic struck.

The offense is led in scoring by Alfred Worrell Jr., who averages 17.5 points per contest and is the team's most lethal 3-point threat. Elijah Davis missed a stretch of games earlier this season, but he's found his shooting stroke in league play while averaging 13.8 points per game and leading the team in assists with 137.

Rob Lawson splits the point duties with Davis. He averages 12.6 points and has racked up 110 assists this season. The Bears play at the fastest pace in the MEAC and will often find mismatches in going with smaller, quicker lineups.

While the MEAC is a league full of bad defenses, the Bears have the least efficient stop unit in the conference. Morgan State doesn’t force a ton of turnovers and due to the smaller-sized lineups it regularly deploys, it often gets eaten alive on the glass.

This leads to second-chance opportunities or trips to the foul line for its opponents. No one in the country sends opponents to the foul line more frequently than Morgan State.

Norfolk State vs. Morgan State Betting Analysis

Norfolk State is a hot shooting team right now, and the Spartans didn't lose a game in the month of February. These guys are the best in the conference at getting to the foul line and should approach 30 foul shots against the Bears.

I'm not confident in Morgan State’s ability to defend without fouling, and the Bears give up a ton of size in the post.

While Norfolk State is a poor rebounding team in general, I think the weakness is mitigated by the size advantage the Spartans have. Morgan State collected just four offensive rebounds in the first meeting, while Norfolk State had 16. I look for the Spartans to have continual second-chance opportunities in this one.

Norfolk State has to be fully locked in here for this game, which could very likely determine the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, particularly because of how the first meeting played out. The Spartans outplayed Morgan State throughout and found themselves out in front by 10 points with four minutes to go.

Turnovers and missed foul shots contributed to an improbable Morgan State comeback, something the Bears have been accustomed to doing.

Norfolk State had a 94% win probability in that prior matchup, and I think we'll see the Spartans close it out here in this one.

My Pick: Norfolk State -2.5 (Play to -3.5)
