Quinnipiac vs St. John's College Basketball Betting Preview
Quinnipiac Basketball
Returning a player of the year in a mid-major league is almost impossible these days.
Amarri Monroe, the MAAC Player of the Year, will look to secure the award in back-to-back seasons.
The 6-foot-8 forward was terrific in 2024-25 (18.1 PPG, 9.1 RPG), but it came on poor efficiency. Monroe shot just 40% from the field and 27% from 3.
Monroe gets his backcourt running mate — Jaden Zimmerman — back for his sophomore season. Zimmerman is an off-ball guard who averaged 11 points per game as a freshman.
It's another minor miracle that Tom Pecora was able to retain not just Monroe, but Zimmerman. Those two will get plenty of scoring chances versus the Johnnies.
But I don't see this game being very close. It wasn't close last year when Quinnipiac had a double-double machine in Paul Otieno next to Monroe.
Now the only five-man with any Division I experience is 7-footer Spence Wewe, who averaged more fouls than points as a freshman. He has some upside, but Wewe has a tall task against Ejiofor.
Wewe is the lone player on the Bobcats' roster who stands taller than 6-foot-9. The 6-foot-9 options are a bit limited, too. Grant Randall is a four-man who weighs sub-200 pounds, and Sam Nosakhare is a freshman from Nigeria.
This Bobcats team is probably the best in the MAAC — or at least a top-tier squad. But there's a difference in playing Siena in February and facing Rick Pitino and the Johnnies.
St. John's Basketball
St. John's is without question one of the sport's more polarizing teams.
The Johnnies broke the bank in the transfer portal, leading to an immense amount of talent. But it's still a bit of a clunky-fitting roster.
Point guard play is the real concern. Last year, they had Kadary Richmond and Deivon Smith. This year, Oziyah Sellers is starting at point guard for the Johnnies, and he averaged a whopping 1.3 assists at Stanford. He's more of a pure shooter than a lead guard.
The issue is that Dylan Darling is the only actual point guard on the roster. That'll matter more in league play than it will versus Quinnipiac.
In this matchup, the Johnnies can use their skilled guards — Ian Jackson, Joson Sanon and Sellers — to create perimeter looks and feed stud bigs Bryce Hopkins and Zuby Ejiofor. Having a pair of bigs like Hopkins and Ejiofor means domination against a smaller mid-major.
Also, keep an eye on the Johnnies' shooting this year. They attempted 3s on just 31% of their field goals last season, a byproduct of a poor shooting roster.
With more marksmen in the fold, St. John's should shoot 3s closer to 33-35% of the time.
The Johnnies are also one of the elite offensive rebounding teams in college basketball.
Quinnipiac vs. St. John's Betting Analysis
I just can't see this game being competitive.
The two ways mid-major squads end up as a tune-up for high-major foes are by allowing offensive rebounds and turning the ball over.
Pecora wants to play fast, which leads to some giveaways. The Bobcats gave the ball away at a 17.9% clip last season, and Pitino teams tend to force a lot of turnovers.
The biggest difference is the rebounding. The Bobcats will get tormented by the Red Storm due to their lack of size.
My Pick: St. John's -25
