Radford vs UNC College Basketball Betting Preview
Radford Basketball
Radford comes into this one having followed up a season-opening win against Western Illinois by defeating non-Division I West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday.
Radford head coach Zach Chu made good on his promise of ramping up the tempo and playing a more fluid, position-less style than we're used to seeing from the Highlanders.
While it's hard to draw absolute conclusions given the level of competition played, Radford has certainly played faster and Del Jones and Dennis Parker Jr. have been the go-to scorers (each are averaging over 14 points per contest).
The bench runs deep, as Radford has seen 10 players play significant minutes early in this season.
I think we continue to see the high pace from the Highlanders, who should have some success in transition and in getting to the foul line, where they're 19th-best nationally.
UNC Basketball
UNC comes in off of a massive home win last Friday against Kansas. The Tar Heels trailed by eight at the half, but they dominated the Jayhawks in the second half while pounding them on the offensive glass and at the rim.
The big news for UNC this week is that senior guard Seth Trimble broke his arm in workouts and will be sidelined for some time. Trimble was key in the second half of the win against Kansas, and his offensive output and defensive tenacity will be missed.
Caleb Wilson and Henri Veesaar should create a lot of problems for Radford in this game. UNC has 28 offensive rebounds over its first two contests this season, and I would expect the Heels to have plenty of second-chance opportunities in this game.
It'll be interesting to see how the Radford style of play can create advantages in transition, and I think this is a spot where Hubert Davis will let his guys run with his opponent.
Radford vs. UNC Betting Analysis
Davis ran pace early in the non-conference each of the last two seasons before throttling it down in league play. We should see 75+ possessions here, and I expect this to be a fun one.
With a total set at 153.5 and given the number of total possessions we should see, I like this one to go over.
UNC has been very efficient offensively early on this season, while averaging 91.5 points per game and ranking 18th in the KenPom adjusted efficiency metric.
While UNC hasn't gotten to the line a ton this season, I think its size advantage will really create problems for Radford down low, which will create easy looks inside.
The Highlanders struggled defensing Western Illinois in the paint and should struggle here, too. The Highlanders have allowed offensive rebounds on 46% of missed shots and they won't have the size to compete down low.
Chu wants to run and we should see shots early in the possession frequently for Radford in an attempt to get its slashers out in space on the offensive end.
This is a matchup schematically that should create plenty of opportunities at the charity stripe. I think the pace will be higher than expected and each team will shoot plenty of 3s. If we get halfway decent shooting, we should see it get over the posted total.
I would bet this one up to 157.
My Pick: Over 153.5 (Play to 157)
