San Francisco Basketball

I find San Francisco to be a bit underrated to begin the season. The Dons won 25 games last season, but lost their only two double-digit scorers (Malik Thomas and Marcus Williams).

San Francisco did bring back three hugely important pieces. Guard Ryan Beasley looks poised to become a superstar in his junior year. He'll get a chance to be the go-to guard for the Dons. Wing Tyrone Riley is a reliable jumper away from being an NBA player. He's an elite athlete who should help match the Tigers' athletes, and Junjie Wang adds front-court versatility.

Vukasin Masic had a terrific Dons' debut as well. The 6-5 guard scored just three points, but he had nine assists and no turnovers. With Beasley and Masic, the Dons have two ball-handling guards who can take over.

I envision this San Francisco squad improving offensively this year. Every starter can shoot the ball, as 7-footer Guillermo Diaz Graham can hit shots from deep, as can Wang.

Don't sleep on former five-star recruit Mookie Cook or freshman Legend Smiley, either. Cook came off the bench in the opener, but he still has the talent to be an X-Factor. Smiley led the Dons in scoring against UC Santa Cruz and could be on his way to a larger role.

Memphis Basketball

I’d argue this season is Penny Hardaway’s biggest coaching season to date. Memphis won 29 games a season ago, but lost all five of its starters and basically all of its depth.

The Tigers brought in a bunch of guards. The biggest name is Dug McDaniel, who could finally blossom for a coach who’ll let him play free. He’ll need to be more efficient, though. McDaniel is speedy and gifted, but he shot 37% from the field and 25% from 3 last year. If McDaniel can’t be more efficient, that’ll be an issue.

Adding stout defenders like Quante Berry, Zach Davis, and Julius Thedford would make sense for Memphis to buy into a defensive-first mindset.

Conversely, Davis and Berry are poor shooters. Berry shot just 33% on low volume at Temple, and Davis shot 27% at South Carolina.

Hardaway will have to find the proper lineup combination with all these guards. If they want to sell out for scoring, expect a steady dose of McDaniel, Curtis Givens, and Sincere Parker. I expect a more balanced lineup, though. That lineup is small and would get throttled defensively.

Replacing the dominant Dain Dainja could be difficult. He was such a safety blanket for the Tigers offensively a season ago. In Aaron Bradshaw, Memphis adds a better rim-protector and defensive option. But he’s nowhere near Dainja’s offense — and the depth behind Bradshaw is shaky — at best.

San Francisco vs. Memphis Betting Analysis

I'm rolling the underrated Dons here. I don't love this Memphis squad on paper, and think all the roster turnover could lead to them taking a bit to figure things out.

Sure, San Francisco is on the road. I'm not too worried about San Francisco being concerned about the brighter lights of the FedEx Forum. This is an experienced team, with a terrific coach in Chris Gerlufsen, who can devise a game plan to make Memphis play out of sorts.

I also think taking a longer shot on the ML is a fun one. That won't be my official pick, but I do believe the Dons are live here.

My Pick: San Francisco +4.5
