Utah State vs Tulane College Basketball Betting Preview

Utah State Basketball

Utah State is one of the few Mountain West squads that have no losses during a non-conference slate that's been a total trainwreck for the league.

The Aggies have terrific guard play. Everyone is familiar with Mason Falslev, the veteran who led Utah State to the NCAA Tournament in 2024-25. Now a junior, Falslev is having a down campaign compared to last season, as he's averaging four fewer points per game.

The Aggies supplemented Falslev with MJ Collins Jr., a high-major transfer who leads the team with 16 points per game, and Kolby King, a sniper off the bench.

King is the only player on Utah State who’s shooting it well from deep. The 6-foot-1 guard is 4-for-9 from downtown (44%), while nobody else is connecting at better than 33%.

All in all, the Aggies are at 25% from deep this season, which is a far cry from their 34.9% from last season.

The biggest advantage for the Aggies in this matchup is on the glass, where they collect offensive boards at a 38% clip. The addition of Garry Clark has transformed the Aggies' interior, as he ranks 15th nationally in offensive rebounding rate and is a walking double-double.

While Clark technically comes off the bench, he’s basically a starter over Tucker Anderson.

I’m not as sold on the Aggies turning their shooting around, as Clark and Karson Templin are non-shooters on the interior. The Aggies won't shoot it this poorly all season, but the roster is built to pounce on the glass rather than be elite at shooting.

Defensively, the Aggies will look to force turnovers. It was their bread and butter last season, and they’re one of the best in the country at getting takeaways once again.

Tulane Basketball

Tulane is hoping to rebound from an ugly 83-65 loss to New Orleans. While New Orleans appears to be better than anyone thought, Tulane should win that game.

Why didn't they? The Privateers went 13-for-24 from 3, and Tulane went 3-for-27 from downtown. That'll result in a loss almost every single time.

The good news is that it's very unlikely to occur again.

Tulane has gotten the short end of the stick in the 3-point variance department, ranking 350th nationally with a 41% 3-point field goal defense. With the Aggies' severe shooting struggles, this might be the spot for those numbers to level out.

Tulane wants to play at a slow-tempo (300th in adjusted tempo) and let its star guard — Rowan Brumbaugh — dominate. Brumbaugh leads the Green Wave with 20 points per game, is shooting 40% from deep and is 36-for-39 from the foul line.

Utah State fouls a ton, so Brumbaugh could help keep Tulane close with his elite free throw shooting.

My primary worry for the Green Wave is rebounding. Starting big man, Tyler Ringgold, should help a bit, but they don't have a true starting power forward. Instead, they play wings Curtis Williams Jr. and Scotty Middleton at the five.

Plus, they rank 238th in defensive rebounding rate and are facing one of the top offensive rebounding teams in the sport.

Utah State vs. Tulane Betting Analysis

All that said, I like Tulane to keep it closer than the spread indicates.

Utah State will surely try to speed up Tulane and force turnovers. However, the Green Wave only turn the ball over 13% of the time.

As long as the Green Wave remain solid in the turnover department, their ability to play slow and get to the foul line is the ideal formula to play a close game.

My Pick: Tulane +11
