Ryan Odom has taken the reigns of the Virginia basketball program, and thus far, things have been going well in his first season.

The Cavaliers enter the ACC/SEC Challenge with a record of 6-1, with their only loss coming to Butler in a tight game on a neutral floor.

The Hoos beat a solid Northwestern team and took care of business convincingly against all of the teams they were supposed to beat.

It's basically a brand-new roster from a season ago, but Odom has done a nice job of blending some transfer portal talent with a few impressive freshmen.

Belgian forward Thijs De Ridder is one of those freshmen, and he's been a revelation to this point in the season. De Ridder is shooting over 44% from 3-point range, can also score it in the paint and is rebounding the basketball at a high level.

North Dakota State transfer Jacari White has also been an important piece for Virginia, particularly on the offensive end. White is averaging over 17 points a night, shooting over 45% from the field and gives the Hoos a veteran guard that can make big shots in crunch time.

When looking at Wednesday night's matchup against Texas, it's important to note that this will be the first true road game of the season for Virginia. The first road game of the campaign is always a challenge, and the Moody Center has become a pretty darn good home environment for the Longhorns.

Virginia will need its defense to show up in a big way in this one as shots may not fall out of the gates. That's a bit concerning given the Cavaliers rank outside the top 85 nationally in Ken Pom's adjusted defensive efficiency rankings.

Just as Virginia has a new head coach in 2025-26, the Sean Miller era also begins for Texas this season.

Miller has a well-documented history of success at his various stops throughout his career, but this will be his first time coaching in the SEC.

The Longhorns challenged themselves to begin the year, playing a neutral court game against Duke on opening night. Texas ultimately lost that game by 15 points, but it was competitive throughout, and Miller admitted he learned a lot about his team.

Since then, Texas has won six of seven, with the only loss coming in Maui to Arizona State at the buzzer. The Longhorns' win over NC State should age well come March.

Texas is inside the top 70 in both offensive and defensive efficiency, as it shows a decent amount of balance on both sides of the floor.

However, there's room to grow on the defensive end. Miller coached teams have historically been very good on that end, so it's fair to expect some continued improvement as the season goes on.

While the Longhorns have plenty of new faces, there's some continuity with guys like Jordan Pope, Tramon Mark and Chendall Weaver all returning from last season's team.

Each has been around college basketball for a long time, and Mark, in particular, has made a ton of big plays in tight games throughout his career.

Xavier transfer Dailyn Swain, who Miller brought with to Austin, has been producing at a high level and could be in for a big night against the Virginia frontcourt.

Virginia vs. Texas Betting Analysis

I like the home team in this one to create some margin in the second half and ultimately cover the number.

Texas impressed me in its three-game showing at the Maui Invitational and it has a bunch of different guys that can get to the rim and score or find the open man.

I also think home court will loom large in this one, and I expect a slower start from Virginia in what should be a good atmosphere in Austin.

Texas is the more experienced team, is playing good basketball right now and is in its own building.

Give me the Horns to win and cover in what should be a fun one.

My Pick: Texas -2.5 (Play to -4.5)
