Wisconsin vs Indiana College Basketball Betting Preview
Wisconsin Basketball
The win in Ann Arbor over Michigan has totally transformed the trajectory of Wisconsin's season.
The Badgers have won seven of their last eight games and are playing a much more consistent brand of basketball.
Nick Boyd and John Blackwell combine to form one of the best backcourts in the Big Ten, and each are taking care of the ball and knocking down a bunch of shots from the perimeter.
For the season, Wisconsin ranks 17th nationally in lowest turnover percentage. Taking care of the basketball and getting good shots each trip has been a staple of this program dating back to the Bo Ryan days, and under Greg Gard, this team embodies that very well.
There's room for improvement defensively, however, as the Badgers don't really turn opponents over and are conceding far too many easy layups at the rim.
Indiana has been a better offensive team in its own building, so Wisconsin will need to be ready to guard right from the tip in this one.
Big men Nolan Winter and Austin Rapp will also need to do their job on the backboards and keep the Hoosiers off the offensive glass.
Another key will be whether or not the Badgers can get it going from beyond the arc, as Indiana has been hurt from 3-point range by some opponents — like Iowa — that can really shoot it. There will be some clean looks for the guards, and knocking down a healthy clip will be key.
Indiana Basketball
Just as Wisconsin secured a win over a top-10 opponent to build momentum, the Hoosiers did the same in a home win over Purdue on January 27. That was followed by a road win at UCLA, giving Indiana two Quad 1 victories that will travel all the way to Selection Sunday.
Saturday is another opportunity for Indiana to add a resume win and move back above .500 in Big Ten play. Indiana ranks inside the top 50 in Ken Pom's offensive and defensive efficiency rankings, showing that there's balance on both sides of the floor in terms of how the Hoosiers want to play.
To be a real threat come March, however, the Hoosiers need to continue to get a little bit better on each end.
Lamar Wilkerson and Tucker DeVries are two veteran shotmakers who can be trusted to make big plays late in games, which is a strong foundation.
Drake transfer point guard Conor Enright is the ultimate dirty work guard. He doesn't look to score it much, but he plays his tail off and constantly looks for the open man in the half-court.
Rebounding has plagued Indiana for a good chunk of the season, as the Hoosiers aren't particularly big and rely on a committee approach to keep opposing bigs off the glass.
Wisconsin has size — with the aforementioned Winter and Rapp — so every Hoosier on the floor will need to be committed to boxing out if Indiana wants to limit the Badgers' second-chance opportunities.
Indiana whiffed in two early opportunities at home to quality opponents (losses to Nebraska and Iowa). It bounced back and got the job done against Purdue, though.
I anticipate an effort more in line with the Purdue game, as it feels like this team is starting to gain momentum in February.
Wisconsin vs. Indiana Betting Analysis
Two of the hotter teams in the Big Ten square off Saturday afternoon in Assembly Hall in what should be a great basketball game.
While I anticipate a back-and-forth affair, I like the Hoosiers to create some separation in the second half and ultimately win and cover.
Assembly Hall will be rocking in this one — which is certainly worth a couple of points — and Indiana has been a much different basketball team over the last couple of weeks.
Darian DeVries' team will make the Badgers work for every bucket they make in the half-court, and guys like Nick Dorn and Tayton Conerway continue to make strides on the offensive end.
Give me the Hoosiers to win this one by two-plus possessions at home, securing the cover in the process while continuing to improve their Big Ten positioning.
My Pick: Indiana -3.5 (Play to -4.5)
