Arizona State Sun Devils Betting Preview: Cleaner Play Incoming?

There are high expectations in Tempe following a Big 12 title a year ago. The Sun Devils were a play away from making the CFP semifinals, and Kenny Dillingham has the program in as good of shape as it's been in some time.

The 2025 campaign began with a relatively straightforward victory over Northern Arizona, with a final score of 38-19.

Star running back Cam Skattebo is gone, but quarterback Sam Leavitt returns, along with stud wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, who went for 141 yards and two touchdowns in the opener.

As a whole, ASU’s roster returns 16 starters from last season, making it one of the more veteran units in the FBS. That continuity, especially along the offensive line, is why many believe the Sun Devils could challenge for another Big 12 title.

There's no reason why Arizona State shouldn't be explosive on offense once again, but will it be able to consistently convert in those short-yardage situations without Skattebo?

On the defensive end, while plenty of starters return from last year, the opener was a bit concerning. Northern Arizona went for 331 yards of total offense, and ASU had multiple sloppy penalties in the process.

The challenge is much more difficult on Saturday night, as the Sun Devils head on the road to face a capable Mississippi State offense led by veteran quarterback Blake Shapen.

Arizona State will need to be cleaner on both sides of the ball if it wants to leave Starkville with a victory.

Mississippi State Bulldogs Betting Preview: Signal Caller Back Healthy

It was a long and frustrating year one for Jeff Lebby in Starkville.

He was dealt an extremely tough hand, essentially inheriting a brand-new roster and competing in the toughest conference in America.

The Bulldogs went winless in SEC play and finished 2-10 overall.

With a full offseason to build some continuity, as well as a decent haul from the transfer portal, there's some reason for optimism for the Bulldog faithful entering 2025.

The season got off to a smooth enough start with a 34-17 victory over Southern Miss last week.

Things get more difficult very quickly however, with the defending Big 12 champs coming to town this week.

The good news is Lebby has a dynamic air-raid system, and he has his signal caller back healthy in Shapen, who missed most of last year due to injury.

Arizona State plays an aggressive and attacking style of defense, but that leaves it sometimes susceptible to the big play. Mississippi State will have chances to create chunk plays down the field, so long as it can give Shapen enough time to deliver the ball.

On the defensive end, Leavitt is a dynamic quarterback that can use his legs, so being able to spy him while he's in the pocket will be important.

Beyond that, creating a turnover or two early in front of what will be a raucous home crowd would go a long way in flipping this game in favor of the Bulldogs.

Coleman Hutzler's defense will look to stop the Sun Devil rushing attack and force Leavitt into third-and-long situations.

Arizona State vs Mississippi State Pick, Betting Analysis

The cowbells will be out in full force at Davis Wade Stadium for a primetime game against an opponent who beat the Bulldogs a year ago.

This is an opportunity for revenge for Mississippi State, and it's also a chance to build real momentum entering SEC play.

I think there are paths to success for the Bulldogs on both sides of the ball in this one, and I expect a nip-and-tuck contest throughout.

Shapen has seen all kinds of different defensive looks throughout his career, and he shouldn't be phased by whatever Arizona State defensive coordinator Brian Ward throws at him.

If I had to pick the game straight up, I'd lean towards Arizona State in a close one.

But given the home team is nearly a full touchdown underdog in what should be a back-and-forth affair, I see plenty of value in backing Mississippi State to keep this game inside one possession.

There's a chance the Bulldogs pull off the outright upset but give me Lebby's team catching the points.

Pick: Mississippi State +6.5
