The Sun Belt takes center stage on Thursday night with a South Alabama vs. Georgia Southern matchup, which otherwise would be lost amongst a sea of ~40 Saturday games.
That means bettors will be doing some basic research they probably otherwise wouldn’t be, like discovering each team’s record, past opponents and points per game along the way.
For Thursday’s game in particular, though, there’s another piece of information that they’ll want to be aware of: the weather.
Odds, forecast as of Thursday at 5:10 p.m. ET.
South Alabama vs. Georgia Southern Weather Forecast
Some rain mixed with significant wind is expected to be hitting Statesboro throughout the game.
In our database (which goes back to 2005 for college football), the latter has been a one-ingredient recipe for unders.
To be specific, games played in average wind speeds of 13 mph or more have gone 551-424-31 to the under over the past 15+ years — that’s a 56.5% win rate. And when that threshold is bumped up to 17 mph (which Thursday’s game is projected to meet), the win rate improves to 58.9%, with a 169-118-5 record.
The theory makes sense, too. More wind means greater passing difficulty, which not only cuts down on big passing plays, but likely keeps the ball on the ground more often. That means more clock movement and fewer plays, which means fewer scores.
This over/under opened around 49.5 at most shops, and after reaching 51.5 on Tuesday, has begun a back-and-forth pattern over the past 48 hours between 51 and 52 — currently on the higher side of that range.
Stay tuned for weather updates, as this page will be updated into Thursday afternoon with the latest wind projections and odds.
