Texas Tech Red Raiders

The team to beat in the Big 12 is the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Head coach Joey McGuire and his staff went to work in the transfer portal in the offseason, spending over $12 million to secure 21 high-caliber transfers, including elite defensive linemen like Stanford’s David Bailey.

The transfer class ranked second nationally and was by far the best haul of any team in the conference.

That influx of talent has paid big-time dividends, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. A program that's so often been the butt of jokes about defense being optional has a swarming unit in 2025.

The Red Raiders haven't surrendered more than 17 points in a game so far this season and have been absolutely stifling opponents left and right.

They've already forced 12 turnovers for the year and have been able to generate pressure consistently with just their front four.

In addition to all the newcomers, Tech brought back a good bit of experience on the offensive side of the ball. That includes veteran quarterback Behren Morton, who's been through the battles of the Big 12, as well as Coy Eakin and Micah Hudson, two of his more reliable pass-catchers.

Morton has gotten banged up at various points this season, and backup Will Hammond was very effective in relief. Hammond saw a good bit of time last year, and there are some that believe he may actually give Tech a bit more upside.

Morton is listed as questionable for this week, but regardless of who's the signal-caller against the Sun Devils, the Red Raiders' attack should keep humming along.

Texas Tech has an opportunity on Saturday to grab its third Big 12 road win and move to 7-0 on the year.

The buzz in Lubbock is palpable, and for good reason.

Arizona State Sun Devils

Arizona State won the Big 12 a season ago and came into 2025 with sky-high expectations.

Stud quarterback Sam Leavitt returned, as did wide out Jordyn Tyson, and the duo remains one of the best QB/WR combinations in all of college football.

There's no replacement, however, for a guy like Cam Skattebo. The running back, who's now starring for the Giants, did so many little things in both the running and passing game, and without him, the Sun Devils' offense simply doesn't have the same level of explosiveness.

It was ugly last week for Arizona State in Salt Lake City. That was in part due to the fact that Leavitt was out with injury, leaving Jeff Sims as the signal caller.

But beyond that, Arizona State allowed over 400 yards of offense to a mediocre Utah attack, including 276 yards on the ground.

That's cause for concern against a Texas Tech rushing attack — led by Cameron Dickey — that's been very effective all season.

Arizona State does return home and should be significantly healthier this week, but Kenny Dillingham's team will need to be much sharper to have a chance of pulling the upset in this one.

I'd expect him to pull out plenty of stops in this one, including a potential fake punt and an aggressive mentality on fourth down in general.

When Arizona State is at its best — like in the second half against TCU or in a win at Baylor — it has the talent to give the Red Raiders a game on its home turf.

Texas Tech vs Arizona State NCAAF Week 8 Pick

With Leavitt trending towards playing on Saturday, I see enough value on Arizona State getting over a touchdown at home to roll with the Sun Devils on the spread.

I still like Texas Tech to win the game and view it as the better team, but this is a do-or-die spot for Arizona State after getting trounced last week by Utah and now welcoming its star quarterback back.

It should be a great atmosphere in Tempe, and Dillingham will have his team ready to go.

Texas Tech is balanced as any team in the conference, but this will be one of the more capable defenses it'll have faced to date, and I expect Arizona State to be flying around to the ball, particularly in the red zone.

The turnover battle will loom large, but I can't pass up the home team getting this many points in what should be a fun one on Saturday.

Pick: Arizona State +8.5
