Patriots vs Saints NFL Week 6 Preview
The Patriots hit the road for New Orleans to face the Saints in what feels like a classic “buy-low, sell-high spot” this week.
The Pats are coming off a big win over the Bills in primetime on Sunday Night Football, and now they travel to face a Saints team that has just one win.
I could see the Patriots coming out sleepy in this spot, and I'm going to say it for the fourth straight week: the Saints aren't as bad as people think.
Spencer Rattler has been playing at a league-average level; Drake Maye continues to perform at an extremely high one.
However, I’m not sure Maye can sustain his current pace. He's gotten away with a handful of turnover-worthy throws the last few weeks, and his play on late downs has been very good.
Eventually, Maye is going to be elite NFL quarterback that we can count on week-to-week, but I still expect him to hit a few bumps in the road before he reaches that level consistently.
I don’t love the Patriots defense, but that said, I don’t expect either team to find much success running the ball.
That should lead to a high-variance type of game — the kind where Rattler and Taysom Hill can make a few unpredictable plays.
Again, the Saints haven't played all that bad this season. The only time they were truly out of the contention was in their loss to Seattle, when special teams blunders let the game slip away.
The Saints even had a chance to take the lead against Buffalo on the road. This is a New Orleans' team that battles, especially at home.
Patriots vs Saints Prediction, Betting Analysis
The Patriots are difficult to project right now. They looked much sharper than expected on Sunday Night Football, but Buffalo’s sloppy start played a big role in New England escaping with a victory.
Last week, Maye showed that he was able to shift into a higher gear and elevate New England's offense.
However, my main concern with the Patriots moving forward is their level of consistency, now that everybody knows they are capable of competing with the top dogs.
The Patriots still have issues with ball security. Rhamondre Stevenson has been unreliable, and with only two viable backs available, the margin for error is small. The Patriots are a high-variance team that can beat a Super Bowl contender one week and then lose to one of the the worst teams in the league the next.
Don't forget, this is still the same New England team that suffered an embarrassing home loss to the Raiders in Week 1.
I expect this to be an up-and-down rollercoaster ride for the Patriots all season, and this feels like one of the down spots.
Give me the Saints to win outright.
