Stars vs. Avalanche Preview

The Avalanche and Stars waste no time renewing acquaintances as the home-and-home series shifts north to Denver following last night's 3-2 Avalanche victory in Texas.

Martin Necas provided the offense for Colorado on Tuesday, lighting the lamp twice in the second period to give the Avs enough breathing room to pull away.

Beyond the scoreboard, the game carried plenty of edge. Avs superstar Nathan MacKinnon engaged in an unlikely tilt with Stars forward Roope Hintz, marking MacKinnon's second fight already this young season.

Lineup card changes will dictate a lot of the pace tonight.

For the Avalanche, superstar defenseman Cale Makar was a late scratch on Tuesday for the best possible reason: the birth of his child. His status for tonight remains uncertain.

The Stars face an absence of their own after young star Wyatt Johnston missed last night's contest due to illness, ending a streak of 395 consecutive games played to start his career. Johnston did not travel with the team to Denver and has officially been ruled out for tonight's game.

With the back-to-back turnaround, both squads turn to their backup netminders.

Scott Wedgewood gets the nod for Colorado after Mackenzie Blackwood handled Tuesday's duties. Wedgewood has only made one appearance so far this year, allowing three goals on 29 shots against Calgary. However, he is fresh off a standout campaign where he posted a league-leading .921 save percentage alongside a fifth-ranked 23.1 Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx).

Casey DeSmith takes the crease for Dallas. Like Wedgewood, DeSmith has just one start under his belt this season, but he was stellar in a 2-1 loss against Nashville, where he received virtually no support.

Stars vs Avalanche Prediction

This matchup seems to be fairly priced on the surface, but if Makar is cleared to suit up tonight, this line becomes a fairly easy one for me.

My projection model sets the Avalanche moneyline at fair odds of -192, representing clear value against their current market price of -140. With Wyatt Johnston missing from the Dallas forward group for a second straight night, the depth matchup heavily favors Colorado on home ice.

Pick: Colorado Avalanche Moneyline
