Where the Blue Jackets Stand

Columbus finished 2025-26 at 40-30-12 with 92 points, fifth in the Metropolitan Division, and missed the playoffs for a sixth straight season. The club fired Dean Evason on Jan. 12, and Rick Bowness went 21-11-5 after taking over, though a 2-8-1 finish knocked Columbus out of a playoff spot. President of hockey operations and general manager Don Waddell gave Bowness, 71, a one-year deal for 2026-27.

Zach Werenski won the Norris Trophy after scoring 22 goals and 81 points in 75 games. Adam Fantilli skipped the start of training camp, then signed a six-year, $82.5 million contract on Sept. 24 after a 24-goal, 59-point season.

On Sept. 28 Waddell traded Kirill Marchenko, last season's team leader with 27 goals, to Toronto with Elvis Merzlikins and Miles Wood for Matthew Knies, Emil Andrae, Steven Lorentz and a conditional 2027 second-round pick. Boone Jenner (Washington) and Mason Marchment (San Jose) left in free agency, while Columbus traded for Valeri Nichushkin and signed Ryan Lomberg. Isac Lundestrom tore his Achilles over the summer.

Jet Greaves owns the crease after going 26-19-9 with a .908 save percentage in 55 games, and he signed a three-year, $15 million deal in July. Pheonix Copley backs him up, and the gap between those two goalies is this team's biggest nightly pricing variable.

Eastern Conference and Metropolitan Division Context

Division games make up 28 of 84 on the schedule, four against each of seven rivals, and the first two playoff rounds run through the division bracket.

The Carolina Hurricanes set the bar, winning the division with 113 points and then the Stanley Cup. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers both finished on 98 points to claim the other two automatic spots. The Washington Capitals placed fourth at 95 and added Jenner. Columbus came next, with the New York Islanders one point back at 91, the New Jersey Devils at 87 and the New York Rangers last at 77.

Ottawa took the East's second wild card with 99 points, seven more than Columbus. Six Metro teams finished between 87 and 98 points, so the race for third and the wild-card chase overlap. Columbus closes with four straight Metro games: two against Washington, then Philadelphia and the Islanders.

Blue Jackets 2026-27 Point Total

BetRivers lists the Blue Jackets at 91.5 points, with the over at -110 and the under at -118. The 84-game schedule lifts every point total above an 82-game equivalent, since each team gets two extra games to bank points. Columbus' 92-point rate works out to about 94 over 84 games, so books set this number roughly three points below last season's pace.

The Blue Jackets angle: Columbus went 12-12 in 24 games past regulation last season, banking 12 loser points, and 7-2 in shootouts, a record that tends to drift back toward even. The over case rests on a full year of Bowness' structure: Columbus cut its goals allowed from 3.38 per game before the coaching change to 2.68 after it.

BetRivers prices Columbus at +6600 to win the Stanley Cup (about 1.5% implied), +3300 to win the East and +1400 to win the Metro. The Panthers, Avalanche and Hurricanes top the Cup market. Books disagreed widely on Columbus this fall, so shop before you bet a long shot.

The NHL's version of the point spread is the puck line. Books set it at 1.5 goals in nearly every game and adjust the price instead of the number.

The Blue Jackets cover by winning by two or more goals. The Sharks cover by winning outright or losing by one. The half-goal means neither side can push.

So many NHL games finish within one goal that the favorite usually pays plus money on the puck line, while the underdog costs a steep price. A winning $100 bet on Blue Jackets -1.5 at +165 returns $265: the $100 stake plus $165 in profit. Backing Sharks +1.5 at -200 means risking $200 to win $100.

At most books, a game decided in overtime or a shootout goes down as a one-goal win, so the +1.5 side cashes any time the game gets past regulation. Late in close games, the trailing team pulls its goalie for an extra skater, and an empty-net goal is often what turns a one-goal win into a puck line cover.

Betting Blue Jackets Totals

Books set a total for the combined goals both teams score, then let bettors take a side.

Say books post Blue Jackets vs. Penguins at 6.5, with the over at +105 and the under at -125. The over cashes if the two teams combine for seven or more goals. The under cashes at six or fewer. A half-goal total cannot push. When books post a whole number like 6, a six-goal game pushes and both sides get their stake back.

NHL totals sit in a narrow band, mostly 5.5 to 6.5, so books move the juice far more often than the number. Overtime goals count toward the total. Most books also add one goal to the winner's score for a shootout win, so a 3-3 game decided in a shootout grades as seven. Check the book's rules.

Betting the Blue Jackets Moneyline

The moneyline asks one question: who wins. At most books it includes overtime and the shootout.

• Blue Jackets -160 / Islanders +135

Minus marks the favorite, plus the underdog. At -160 you risk $160 to win $100. At +135 you risk $100 to win $135.

Converting to implied probability makes the pricing clearer. The -160 favorite implies 61.5%. The +135 underdog implies 42.6%. Those sum to 104.1%, not 100%. The extra 4.1 points are the book's margin, and the book collects it whichever side wins.

One thing worth getting straight: a short price is not automatically a bad bet. Bettors call heavy favorites bad value out of habit, but if the Blue Jackets win this matchup 65% of the time, -160 is a price worth taking, because it only implies 61.5%. Value is the gap between real probability and priced probability. The size of the number tells you nothing on its own.

When one side carries heavier juice than the other, that tells you where money is landing, not which side is correct. If the Blue Jackets drift from -160 to -185, bettors backed the Blue Jackets and the book adjusted its exposure. The team did not become more likely to win.

Books also post a regulation line, sometimes called the three-way or 60-minute line. It adds a third outcome, a tie after regulation, so both teams pay longer prices than on the standard moneyline. The hardest February stretch goes at Colorado on Feb. 15, at Utah on Feb. 17 and at Vegas the next night: two altitude games, then the second half of a back-to-back. Splits break ticket count out from money handled, and the gap is the useful part. If 70% of tickets sit on the over but only 45% of the dollars do, the larger bets are on the under. That is the question uneven juice raises in the totals market, and the splits answer it.

Columbus carries no brand premium and gets only two national US broadcasts: Nov. 10 against Florida on ESPN+, Hulu and Disney+, and April 8 against Philadelphia on TNT, truTV and HBO Max.
