2021 British Open Weather Report & Forecast: Will Wind Be a Factor During Sunday’s Final Round?

Through three rounds, the 2021 British Open has not felt like the kind of tournament we’re used to seeing in England.
Sure, we’ve had thick rough, impossible fescue and bunkers that turn professionals into Wednesday Beer Night amateurs.
But where has the wind and challenging weather gone?
Treacherous winds have hardly appeared. If you saw anyone talking about 25 mph winds, they must’ve been at a different course. Outside of a little pick up on Thursday afternoon, the wind has almost been a non-factor, at least by Open Championship standards.
Will that change on Sunday as Louis Oosthuizen takes a one-stroke lead over Collin Morikawa into the final round?
For an early look at Sunday’s weather report, we turn to AccuWeather to see winds and temperature and how that can impact play with 18 holes remaining.
Sunday’s Final Round Weather Report at Royal St. George’s
Morning play will consist of almost perfect conditions with 75 degree temperatures and almost no wind, according to early forecasts. AccuWeather is reporting just 5 mph of wind with gusts up to 7 mph.
That won’t matter much when it comes to winning the Claret Jug as those with early tee times are out of contention. But as bettors consider individual round score props, matchups or DFS lineups, it’s good to know the morning conditions are ideal for scoring.
Those 25 mph winds don’t seem to have plans of stopping by Royal St. George’s in the afternoon, either. AccuWeather predicts winds of 7 mph out of the east with gusts up to 12 mph. It’s not nothing, but not a complete deterrent either.
Surprises can happen. Winds weren’t expected to be as heavy as they were Thursday afternoon. A late gust at the wrong time could change the outlook of a hole or the tournament.
For now, though, it seems the biggest challenge for Oosthuizen will be the course itself and closing out his first major championship in over 10 years.
