The PGA Tour heads to the 2023 FedEx St. Jude Championship after getting exactly what it was seeking on Sunday at the Wyndham Championship as the drama of the tournament included marquee players trying to make their way into this week's FedExCup Playoffs.

Justin Thomas wasn't a player at the start of the season whom we thought would be on that bubble, but he was right there until his very last chip which clamored off of the flag stick and left him at home for the next three weeks. JT finished 71st in the FedEx Cup Standings, leaving him one outside of the cut for the playoffs this week.

Later in the day, the tournament was stopped by weather, and it seemed to put a halt on Russell Henley's momentum. He bogeyed his way in across the final three holes, opening the door for Lucas Glover to capture his fifth win of his nearly twenty-year career on the PGA Tour. Glover has been playing well for an extended stretch, with this win being a fourth top-six finish in his last five events, and that was enough to overcome his rough stretch to start the season by boosting him from 112th to 49th in the FedExCup Standings.

The top-70 players will be at TPC Southwind for the FedEx St. Jude Championship, and only Thomas will be left out among the big names. This stop has long been a favorite of many as it has created a myriad of great finishes over the years, and we should expect more of the same this week in Memphis.

FedEx St. Jude Championship First Look Picks

Rickie Fowler +3300 (BetRivers)

We saw Rickie Fowler's resurgence this season reach the peak when he broke through for his win back at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. It wasn't a huge event or one with a top-tier field, but the win gives Rickie and his backers the boost he needs going forward.

I have always been in the camp that winning breeds winning, and I think we will see Fowler come through with more wins sooner than later. This event at TPC Southwind is a great place for him to start building some more impressive victories as he has had success at this track in his career, and we are getting a reasonable number on him at +3300 on BetRivers.

Fowler has two top-15 finishes in four tries at this course while gaining strokes putting all four times. He hasn't had a post-win letdown either, with some solid play continuing during the links stretch of the Scottish Open and Open Championship.

I expect Fowler to contend this week on a course that really suits his game, and now I have a little more confidence in his ability to close if he can put himself in contention on Sunday again.

Jason Day +4000 (BetMGM)

Speaking of players making a resurgence this year, Jason Day certainly fits that mold as well. He also broke through for a win earlier in the season, and it was emotional enough for him that it led to some pretty poor golf in the weeks to come.

Day had a stretch of three straight missed cuts following that victory and didn't see the weekend again until the Travelers. It seems to have all come back to him, though, as he started to show some of that pre-win form with his runner-up finish at The Open Championship.

The Australian is another player who has found TPC Southwind to his liking with a T6 here in 2020, and that was during a time when his game wasn't nearly as sharp as it is now. I really like the odds and opportunity for day at +4000 coming into the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Max Homa +4000 (BetRivers)

Wash, rinse, repeat on the many times I have written about Max Homa in this column. It's been since the Farmers Insurance Open back in January that he came through with a win, but to me, I will almost always have interest in him at this type of number as he just has a knack for closing out wins when he has form.

Sure, there are weeks where he never sniffs contention, but he is the exact type of player I like in outright markets where second pays the same as 100th.

Homa's ability to close isn't the only reason I'm on him this week; it's also because of a couple of really good weeks of links golf. He found himself in the mix over the weekend at The Open and finally produced his first top 10 at a major. This was a big step for him going forward, and I think it can propel him to some added success in these closing weeks at the playoffs.
