The PGA TOUR is back with what I think is the best part of the season. Until the TOUR heads to Florida, we get a strong field every week in Hawaii and on the West Coast.

For the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions, Scottie Scheffler is the slight betting favorite over Jon Rahm. World No. 1 Rory McIlroy qualified for this tournament, but he hasn't made the trip to Maui in quite some time.

Scheffler broke out in 2022 with four wins, including one at the Masters. He entered the Tour Championship in control of the leaderboard, but McIlroy ultimately topped him for the season-long title.

Rahm won once on TOUR last season, but showed strong form by winning twice in Europe during the fall. One of those was the DP World Tour championship.

Who qualified for this tournament? Players who either won a PGA TOUR event in 2022 or qualified for the Tour Championship (the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings).

Course Breakdown

The course is a par 73 that measures more than 7,500 yards, but it's gettable with the right conditions. If the wind is cooperating with players, all five par 5s are reachable in two. Players will be disappointed to not come away with a birdie on any of those holes.

The Plantation Course at Kapalua usually sees the winning score at 20-under or better. That has been the case in seven of the past eight editions of this tournament.

Last year was an outlier, with Cameron Smith winning by one stroke at 34-under over Rahm. Conditions were perfect for players, without any rain or significant winds.

This year, there will be noteworthy winds in the mid-teens on Thursday and Friday, although it will be more reasonable over the weekend. The current forecast, as of Sunday night, doesn’t call for any rain, except for a chance throughout Wednesday.
