2023 Butterfield Bermuda Championship Preview

The PGA Tour heads to Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda for the 2023 Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

This is the sixth of seven FedExCup Fall events after Erik van Rooyen shot a back-nine 28 (-8) by sinking an eagle putt on the 72nd hole to win his second PGA Tour tournament at the World Wide Technology Championship on Sunday afternoon. The South African opened at +2500 to win this week but has since withdrawn from the field.

He was listed on the 2023 Butterfield Bermuda Championship Odds behind 14-time PGA Tour winner Adam Scott, who is the outright betting favorite at open on bet365 at +1700 odds. The Aussie is making his tournament debut this week in Bermuda while playing in his second FedExCup Fall event this season after he finished T41 in Japan at the Zozo Championship two weeks ago.

Brendon Todd opened in a tie with Akshay Bhatia for the second-shortest odds at open on bet365 to win the Butterfield Bermuda Championship outright at +1900.

Todd finished T6 in his lone start so far this fall at the Fortinet Championship in Napa. This is his third appearance at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship after winning in his tournament debut in 2019 then missing the cut in 2020.

Bhatia finished T17 here last year and is looking to continue his success in 2023 on coastal golf courses. Some of his results at coastal courses this year include a solo second at the Puerto Rico Open, a solo fourth at the Mexico Open and a T10 this past weekend at the World Wide Technology Championship in Los Cabos, Mexico.

This will be Bhatia's fifth start of the FedExCup Fall as the Barracuda Championship winner hunts for his second win of the season on the PGA Tour.

Alex Noren has seen his name rise from +2500 to win the Butterfield Bermuda Championship at open at bet365 to +1900 as of Tuesday afternoon. He had an impressive T3 finish in his last PGA Tour start in the United States at the Shriners Children's Open in Las Vegas.

Last year's Butterfield Bermuda Championship winner, Seamus Power, is not in the field this week as he has already secured a spot in the top 50 of the FedExCup Points List.

Course Preview

Port Royal Golf Course measures 6,828 yards as a par-71 with Bermudagrass greens. The course has three par-5s along with 11 par-4s and four par-3s as it is one of the shortest courses on the PGA Tour.

Among the 11 par-4s on the course, none of them measure over 460 yards, so wedge and short-iron play will be important this week at Port Royal Golf Course.

Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed Port Royal Golf Course in 1971, and this will be the fifth consecutive year that it hosts the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Unfortunately, the course does not have Strokes Gained data for us to analyze over its four-year history.

Butterfield Bermuda Championship Past Winners

Lucas Herbert, Brian Gay and Todd are the past winners in the field for this week's Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

Power won the Bermuda Championship last year by shooting a final-round 70 to finish at -19, one shot ahead of Thomas Detry and two ahead of Patrick Rodgers, Kevin Yu and Ben Griffin. This was Power's second win on the PGA Tour, but the Irishman, who finished 41st in the FedExCup Standings this season, will not be in the field this week to defend his title.

Herbert picked up his first PGA Tour victory in his 20th career start on Tour in 2021 here in Bermuda. He shot a two-under 69 in the final round to beat Danny Lee and Patrick Reed by a stroke at 15-under par.

In 2020, Gay shot a final-round 64 to finish at 15-under par alongside Wyndham Clark, whom Gay would defeat in a playoff. This was Gay's fifth win on Tour, and at the age of 48, he became the oldest PGA Tour winner since Davis Love III at the 2015 Wyndham Championship.

In the inaugural Bermuda Championship in 2019, Todd shot a final-round 62 to win by four strokes at 24-under par over Harry Higgs. Todd's incredible final round featured a streak of seven consecutive birdies at one point, and his final-round 62 was the lowest final-round score by a winner on Tour since Rory McIlroy shot 61 in the final round to win the 2019 RBC Canadian Open.
