2023 RSM Classic Preview

The PGA Tour heads to Sea Island Resort (Seaside and Plantation courses) in St. Simons Island, Georgia for the 2023 RSM Classic.

With this being the last event of both the FedExCup Fall and the 2022-2023 PGA Tour season, there are significant ramifications for the top finishers. Those who finish the week inside the top 125 on the points list keep their Tour cards, while finishers in spots 51-60 will punch their tickets to the first two signature events on the 2024 PGA Tour calendar.

This is the seventh and final FedExCup Fall event after Camilo Villegas shot a final-round 65 (-6) to win his first PGA Tour tournament since the 2014 Wyndham Championship.

He was listed on the 2023 RSM Classic Odds board at +5500 behind PGA Tour rookie Ludvig Aberg, who is the outright betting favorite at open at +1200 odds (bet365). The Swede is making his tournament debut this week at Sea Island while playing in his fourth FedExCup Fall event this season.

Beginning with a T14 at the Wyndham Championship, Aberg has finished in the top 14 in his last seven worldwide starts, including a win at the Omega European Masters on the DP World Tour. He looks to capture his first PGA Tour victory this week.

Cameron Young opened with the second-shortest odds at open at bet365 to win the 2023 RSM Classic outright at +1700.

Young finished T54 in his lone start so far this fall at the World Wide Technology Championship in Cabo. This is his second appearance at the RSM Classic after finishing T29 here in his rookie season on the PGA Tour in 2021. Like Aberg, the Wake Forest Demon Deacon is also searching for his first PGA Tour victory this week.

Reigning Champion Golfer of the Year Brian Harman also opened with the second-shortest odds to win this week at +1700. As of Wednesday afternoon, Harman's odds have drifted to +2200, the third-shortest odds to win outright.

He finished T2 here last year and is making his 12th consecutive RSM Classic start. The Georgia Bulldog has six top-32 finishes in 11 starts at The RSM Classic and is making his first PGA Tour start since the TOUR Championship in August.

Russell Henley has had his odds shorten most significantly among the names at the top of the odds board this week. After opening at +2500 on Monday morning at bet365, his odds have shortened to +1500 as of Wednesday afternoon.

Henley has not teed it up since the Tour Championship, but in his last four starts, he finished T14 or better each time dating back to the Wyndham Championship. The Georgia Bulldog has played in eight RSM Classics and has finished in the top 10 three times.

The only player to beat Harman here last year, 2022 RSM Classic winner Adam Svensson, opened with +3300 odds at bet365 to defend his title at Sea Island, and those odds have drifted to +3800 as of Wednesday afternoon. The Canadian played in this event three times — in 2015, 2018 and 2021 — and missed the cut all three times before winning in 2022. This will be his fifth start of the FedExCup Fall, highlighted by a T16 at the 2023 Sanderson Farms Championship, as he sits T37 in the FedExCup Standings.

Course Preview

Sea Island Golf Club hosts the 2023 RSM Classic on its Seaside Course and Plantation Course this week. Golfers will play one round each on Thursday and Friday at the Plantation and Seaside courses before those who make the cut compete on the Seaside Course for the final two rounds over the weekend.

Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course is 7,005 yards as a par-70. The course has just two par-5s along with 12 par-4s and four par-3s as it is one of the shortest courses on the PGA Tour.

Sea Island Golf Club's Plantation Course is 7,060 yards as a par-72. The course has a full set of five par-5s along with 10 par-4s and four par-3s as it is one of the shortest courses on the PGA Tour.

The Seaside Course has just two par-4s over 450 yards while the Plantation Course has three par-4s over 450 yards. As a result, around 70% of combined approach shots on these two courses have come from 100-200 yards, so targeting players who succeed on approach play from this range will be key.

RSM Classic Past Winners

Svensson, Robert Streb, Tyler Duncan, Austin Cook, Mackenzie Hughes, Kevin Kisner and Chris Kirk are among past winners in the field for this week's RSM Classic.
