Canada vs. Switzerland Preview
Canada
Canada is a massive favorite in this matchup, and for good reason. It is favored to win the tournament, which appears to be a two-horse race between Canada and the United States.
Not only does Canada boast the deepest roster, but it also has the most top-heavy talent, featuring stars such as Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar.
Canada opened the tournament in dominant fashion, securing a 5-0 shutout against Czechia in the opening round. Keep in mind, Czechia is coming off a victory at the 2024 IIHF World Championship, where it defeated Switzerland in the gold medal game.
In that tournament, Czechia and Switzerland brought their best players. Canada did not.
Facing this version of Canada was a rude awakening for Czechia, and it may be the same for Switzerland.
Switzerland
Switzerland is also coming off an impressive 4-0 victory over France to begin its tournament. However, it now faces a much tougher challenge in the tournament favorite.
While Switzerland has several NHL players capable of narrowing the talent gap, an even wider disparity exists in the goaltending matchup. Switzerland started Leonardo Genoni in its opener to preserve Akira Schmid for the second half of a back-to-back against a significantly stronger Canadian team.
Schmid, an NHL netminder for the Vegas Golden Knights, enters this tournament in poor form. Over his final four starts before the Olympic break, he posted a 1-2-1 record with a .880 save percentage.
He struggled against standard NHL competition and now faces what amounts to an All-Star-caliber lineup.

Canada vs. Switzerland Prediction
Canada is expected to start goaltender Logan Thompson. Thompson is among the NHL’s top goaltenders and is on the shortlist for this year’s Vezina Trophy alongside Ilya Sorokin and Andrei Vasilevskiy.
With the superior forward group, defensive corps and goaltender, Canada should be well-positioned to win by three or more goals for the second consecutive game to open the tournament.
Pick: Canada -2.5 (-122 at DraftKings | Play to -125)
