Angels vs Red Sox Preview, Prediction
It's going to be a nice night in Boston and the wind is blowing out over the monster. I'll trust the bad pitcher who induces grounders over the bad pitcher who doesn't.
Angels left-hander Yusei Kikuchi is on a sterling run right now from a run prevention standpoint. In six May starts, he allowed just seven runs in 33 1/3 innings, good for a 1.89 ERA.
I'm mashing the "Sell" button hard on the lefty and I think this is a good place to start, at Fenway on a good night for hitters against an offense that is better against southpaws.
The Red Sox are relatively neutral splits-wise offensively, but they do grade out about 6% better against left-handed pitching. Kikuchi is inducing grounders at a career-worst rate, which is totally fine in Anaheim and some of the more pitcher-friendly parks he's pitched in during this run. It shouldn't work out for him at Fenway and on a night light tonight.
Brayan Bello's ERA is also incredibly smoke-and-mirrors as he has a 3.83 ERA but expected indicators that are more than a run worse. He has 29 strikeouts against 22 walks this year which is dreadful, and he didn't complete five innings in any of his six May starts.
The stuff has also been worse across the board — if you look at metrics like Stuff+ or StuffPro, it's worse than last year.
Bello also had a delayed start to the year after suffering a shoulder strain in camp. He didn't make his debut until the end of April, didn't have a traditional spring training, and I'm willing to wait and see before writing him off entirely.
Angels vs Red Sox Prediction, Betting Analysis
Kikuchi is the better pitcher on paper right now, no doubt, but the Red Sox offense is significantly better than the Angels' offense and I trust Boston to hit Kikuchi much more than I trust L.A. to get to Bello — no matter his faults.
I'm on Boston F5 here and I wouldn't fault you for betting the full game, too.
I think we get a little more length from Bello tonight after Boston had to dip into its bullpen early Monday when Dick Fitts couldn't get out of the first.
