Mariners vs Brewers Pick, Betting Analysis
There probably isn’t a better definition of a “buy-low spot” than backing a team less than 24 hours after it got embarrassed 22-0.
Seattle just suffered the worst loss in franchise history, while Milwaukee tied the modern-era MLB record for the largest shutout victory. The box score was disgusting, but that’s also exactly why I want the Mariners ML tonight.
This handicap starts with Logan Gilbert, who is exactly who I want to back after an embarrassing loss.
Gilbert enters at 9-7 with a 3.28 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 152 Ks, and the underlying numbers support what we’re seeing. His K% sits around 27% while his BB% is below 6%, giving him an elite K-BB profile.
Gilbert's arsenal gives Milwaukee a much different problem than it saw Tuesday. His splitter has developed into a legitimate put-away weapon, and his ability to pair it with the four-seamer gives hitters two completely different movement profiles to cover. He has not been perfect by any stretch of the imagination, as opponents have produced a 41.5% hard-hit rate against him, but he's held hitters to a .281 wOBA with a .297 xwOBA. That's still a strong contact-management profile when combined with his strikeout and walk numbers.
Dustin May is where I see the biggest edge tonight.
May's 4.13 ERA isn't terrible, but the underlying profile is far less trustworthy than Gilbert's. His K% is roughly 21% with an 8%+ BB rate, and opponents are producing a 45.5% hard-hit rate, 90.2 mph average EV and .310 xwOBA against him. That's a lot of loud contact for a pitcher we're being asked to trust against a Seattle lineup with legitimate damage potential.
And yes, May just shoved against San Diego, allowing only 1 ER across 7 IP. I'm willing to sell high on that outing rather than suddenly declare the problems fixed.
Seattle's lineup still has plenty of pop. One historically bad night doesn't erase talent.
Milwaukee also emptied the clip yesterday, scoring nine runs in the eighth inning alone and eventually using position players on the mound. That was an outlier game in every sense of the word.
This is classic baseball zig-zag territory. Tonight we’re getting a massive starting-pitching upgrade for Seattle, a vulnerable arm in May on the other side, and potentially an inflated perception of Milwaukee after the laughter last night.
Gilbert is the better arm, May is the pitcher I want to fade, and Seattle is sitting in about as ugly of a buy-low spot as you're ever going to find.
