Blue Jays vs Rays Preview, Prediction, Betting Analysis
The fifth-inning mark is the absolute ceiling for Tampa Bay starter Joe Boyle. He's topped out at exactly five innings in the majors this season, doing it three times in 10 appearances.
The last time he went more than five innings was June 7 at Triple-A Durham. Ironically, the last time he surpassed that mark at the major league level was in September 2024 against the Rays, as a member of the Athletics.
This will just come down to whether Boyle can get through that fifth inning. He had a shot in the rotation with the Rays coming out of the All-Star break, but couldn't hold onto the job.
Boyle gave up 15 earned runs over his final three starts and was booted back to the minors. He posted a solid 21 strikeouts in 17.2 innings across five starts post-break.
The problem was the 15 walks. He just doesn't throw strikes consistently enough to be a viable starter. He's thrown less than 60% of his pitches for strikes this season (league average Str% is 64.1%). It's difficult to work deep into games with that type of strike rate.
The Rays only used two relievers yesterday, and one of them was sent down to make room for Boyle.
Long relievers Cole Sulser and Joey Gerber didn't appear at all in the last series against the Cubs. They should be good to cover multiple innings apiece against the Blue Jays tonight.
Pick: Joe Boyle Under 14.5 Outs (-135, bet365)
