Nationals vs Phillies Picks: Koerner's Strikeout Prop
Taijuan Walker has settled in as a true 16.5% strikeout rate type of pitcher over the past few seasons. Based on his Spring Training, I doubt that changes heading into his age-33 season — he still lacks a true putaway pitch.
He gets hitters to take strikes at an above-average rate, but that’s among the least reliable ways to sustain a high strikeout rate.
The Nationals’ strikeout rate is around league average, but I have Monday’s projected lineup as the fifth-toughest to strike out on the slate. They’ve been fairly aggressive, swinging at the league’s ninth-highest rate so far this year, which should make it tougher for Walker to rack up the Ks.
There are also concerns about workload. Walker threw just 60 pitches in his last Spring Training start (March 15), and he struck out only three on 64 pitches in his World Baseball Classic start against Brazil. It’s tough to project him for 80-plus pitches in his first MLB start.
The only positive for Walker is that the Nationals are leading off with their highest strikeout rate hitter in James Wood, so Walker should see his top strikeout matchup three times.
Still, Walker likely gets pulled around the second or third lineup spots in his third time through the order. He likely won’t make it to Brady House three times (the second-best player for Walker to strike out), who is projected to hit fifth.
Even if Walker squeezes in an extra hitter or two, it doesn’t move the needle enough against a lineup that is tough to strike out.
I project this Under closer to -155.
