On Saturday, the UFC returns to the Apex for a 12-fight card from Las Vegas, featuring an important showdown in the lightweight division between No. 6 contender Mateusz Gamrot and No. 9-ranked Quillan Salkilld.

The Polish-born Gamrot enters with a 9-4 promotional record, including 2-1 in main events, and he has additional five-round experience from his pre-UFC days in KSW.

Salkilld, who is nine years his junior, has finished four of his five UFC bouts in the first round, and Saturday's bout will mark his first main event for the promotion; still, he did defend his Lightweight belt in Australia's Eternal MMA with a five-round decision in 2023.

Below, I'll provide my analysis and projections for the UFC Vegas 120 Main Event on Saturday afternoon and use those factors to bet on these lightweights. They're expected to make their cage walks at approximately 10:45 p.m. ET (7:45 p.m. PT) on Saturday.

Here's my Gamrot vs. Salkilld pick and prediction.

Tale of the Tape

Salkilld is the larger athlete in this matchup, standing 2" taller than Gamrot, with a five-inch reach advantage. Salkilld began training MMA in 2018 when Gamrot was already a 15-0, two-division KSW champion. Still, he is a dangerous striker who uses his long limbs to leverage power into strikes and grappling techniques that smaller fighters aren't capable of doing.

It's difficult to rely on Salkilld's limited statistical sample. Still, a decision win over Gauge Young on Contender Series in 2024 has aged well (Salkilld out-struck Young 70-57 at distance and landed nine takedowns) and apart from his decision over Yanel Ashmouz, Salkilld has finished his other, more name-brand opposition in under five minutes.

His bottom game remains relatively untested; both Jamie Mullarkey and Beneil Dariush were able to get Salkilld to the ground before getting KOed, and Dariush (2:34 control time in a fight that lasted 3:29) showed that a more durable man, like Gamrot, may be able to implement a grappling-heavy game plan against him.

Gamrot attempts 7.3 takedowns per five minutes at distance – among the highest rates in the lightweight division; he chain wrestles relentlessly, and I'd expect him to land takedowns and potentially hold position (86% control rate) early in this fight. Moreover, Gamrot has the better takedown defense of the pair, which will likely force Salkilld to work solely as a sprawl-and-brawl striker, which matters more in a potentially extended fight, as he's relied on mixing things up and landing takedowns of his own when his fights have hit the scorecards.

That could also have an impact on his cardio – Salkilld won't get a chance to rest in the championship rounds if he can't get on top of Gamrot, and despite the age gap, you do have to favor the older fighter down the stretch.

Still, it's difficult to say that you should target one fighter or the other live from a pre-fight perspective; Salkilld will slow if he's forced to wrestle and scramble constantly defensively, but Gamrot should tire if Salkilld begins to deny those entries as both begin to sweat. Monitor the flow of the fight and their respective body language before a live entry.

My main point of concern for Gamrot is knockdown variance. At the same time, he hasn't been finished by strikes in his professional career, and his only finish loss was a submission against Charles Oliveira. Gamrot has been knocked down five times in the UFC (and wobbled in other fights) without getting finished. As he ages into his late thirties, the durability concerns are going to catch up with him at some point.

Salkilld is the younger and more explosive athlete, offers more variety and volume at distance, and has proven himself against grappling-first fighters (while sometimes outwrestling them). Moreover, given how he has paced in his UFC decisions, along with the five-round regional experience, I'm not particularly concerned about his gas tank, especially against an opponent nearly a decade his senior.

The age/experience tradeoff typically favors the younger fighter; when there is at least an eight-year age gap between MMA opponents, younger fighters win around 69% of the time at average odds closer to -118 or 54% implied; roughly 15% above expectation. MMA is a young man's game; older fighters are more well known, and draw more public betting attention as a result.

Gamrot vs. Salkilld Prediction, Picks

I projected Quillan Salkilld as a -142 favorite, and I would consider taking his moneyline pre-fight to around -140. Still, you can also wait for a better number live, after he potentially gets outgrappled in the opening round.

I project the fight to end inside the distance near two-thirds of the time (-200 implied odds), and you can bet the fight to end by finish, up to -185.

Alternatively, or in addition, bet Salkilld to win by KO/TKO (projected +199, listed +265) or inside the distance (projected +131, listed +135). Or, if you like the underdog, I would play Gamrot by submission (projected +465, listed +650) or inside the distance (projected +327, listed +400).

I'd set this fight closer to 55% to end by finish in the 30-foot-octagon. Still, in the smaller, 25-foot APEX cage, my composite projection (which weights market data against a technical simulation model) jumped to nearly two-thirds, with the model specifically simulating the fight ending by finish 82.8% of the time, compared to closer to 66% implied if you de-vig market odds.
