BYU Basketball

What has happened to BYU? Let me run you through the past six games for the Cougars. They're 1-5 in that span, allowing more than 1.20 points per possession in five of those games and 1.14 points per possession or more in all six.

That has them ranked 220th in defensive efficiency, per Bart Torvik. They're allowing teams to shoot 55% on 2s, which is very poor, but I'll throw some positivity out there: Teams are shooting 42% from deep against them in those six games.

That's just a wholly unsustainable figure, and BYU will have a fighting chance when those shots stop falling.

On the positive side, BYU hasn't let the defensive issues impact it on the offensive end, ranking 12th in efficiency in that span.

It actually has room to grow offensively, as it's shooting just 52% from 2-point range in those six games compared to 56.7% for the season.

The Cougars' scoring trio of AJ Dybantsa, Richie Saunders and Rob Wright III has to show up. Dybantsa is the nation's top scorer at 24 points per game and surpassed that number in three of his past five games.

Saunders had a woeful game in the loss to Houston, and he'll need to get hot from deep. Wright has the ball often and will also need to score near his season average of 19 points per game.

The supporting cast for the Cougars has to provide something. Big man Keba Keita has struggled lately, and starting wing Kennard Davis Jr. hasn't shot it well all season.

If they can do anything, it would help.

Baylor Basketball

Undeniably, Baylor has played much better of late. After taking a beating against Cincinnati and losing seven out of eight games, it felt like the Bears were close to "quit watch" territory.

Since then, the Bears beat West Virginia in Morgantown, pounded Colorado in Waco and kept it close in a road game against Iowa State.

So, what changed for Baylor? For the first time in like five years, Baylor is playing defense. It held West Virginia and Colorado to below 1.00 points per possession and Iowa State to 1.15 points per possession.

The question now is, did Baylor benefit from playing two bad offensive teams in Colorado and West Virginia? I think that's a fair assessment.

Finishing out possessions with a rebound is a real problem for Baylor, as it's allowing opponents to grab offensive rebounds at a 32% rate.

On the offensive end, Baylor — like BYU — relies on three players: Cameron Carr, Tounde Yessoufou and Obi Agbim.

Carr is an athletic freak and shot-maker who leads Baylor with 19 points per game while shooting 52% from the field and 41% from deep. Yessoufou is an imposing force at 6-foot-5, 215-pound talent, which leads him to averaging 17 points per game while shooting 47% from the field.

The key is Agbim, who's scored 14+ points in five straight contests.

Depth is a severe problem for Baylor. The Bears really only have a seven-man rotation, and Dan Skillings Jr. missed Baylor's last game, dropping the rotation to six players.

That feels a bit concerning heading into this battle with BYU.

BYU vs. Baylor Betting Analysis

This feels like a good spot to get back on the BYU train.

The Cougars' defense won't allow 42% shooting forever, and Baylor isn't a very good shooting team.

Facing a strong offense like BYU could lead to Baylor's defensive issues reappearing.

If you told me BYU was only laying 2.5 points to Baylor, on the road, two weeks ago, I'd be stunned.

I have to take it here.

My Pick: BYU -2.5 (Play to -3.5)
