BYU Cougars 2025-26 Season
As of late February 2026, the BYU Cougars (20-8, 8-7 Big 12) find themselves in the thick of a high-stakes postseason push under second-year head coach Kevin Young. The season has been defined by the historic arrival of freshman phenom AJ Dybantsa, the nation's leading scorer (25.1 PPG), who has lived up to every bit of his "No. 1 recruit" billing.
The Cougars reached as high as the top 15 earlier in the year, fueled by an explosive offense that ranks 21st nationally. However, the rigor of the Big 12 caught up to them mid-season, resulting in a tough five-game losing skid in late January and early February before they righted the ship with a massive upset over No. 6 Iowa State on February 21.
The narrative of BYU's season took a somber turn in mid-February when senior leader Richie Saunders (18.0 PPG) suffered a season-ending ACL tear. His absence has left a massive void in both scoring and veteran leadership, forcing Baylor transfer Robert Wright III and Dybantsa to carry an even heavier load.
Despite the injury bug—which also sidelined key rotation players like Dawson Baker and Nate Pickens—BYU remains a lock for the tournament, currently projected as a 6-seed.
They remain a "must-watch" team due to Dybantsa’s star power, but their ceiling in March may depend on whether their thin rotation can survive the physical grind of tournament play without their veteran anchor.
