Georgetown Basketball

Georgetown is one of those stingy defensive squads.

The numbers don't tell the full story about the Hoyas' defense. In their two toughest matchups, they held Clemson to 1.06 PPP and Maryland to 0.88 PPP.

I came away impressed most by the Clemson game. You'd like the 1.06 PPP a bit lower, but the Tigers' barrage of bigs never got rolling, as Georgetown held Clemson to 46% shooting from inside the arc.

The on-ball pressure forces teams to shoot it due to the threat of driving on the strong defenders. Plus, Georgetown limits teams to 41.9% from 2-point range. That's another deterrent from teams going into the lane.

What do the Hoyas have to avoid here? Getting a little too loose with the reach-ins. They foul a ton, and Dayton is terrific at drawing fouls and shoots 72% from the foul line. Georgetown can't gift free points to the Flyers here.

Georgetown has shooting issues, though. The Hoyas connect on a dreadful 26% of their perimeter shots. Malik Mack can shoot, but that's about it. On the right night, KJ Lewis can hit some, but it's not a consistent shot from Lewis.

Georgetown had seven-footer Vince Iwuchukwu in both the Marquette and Clemson games, but he's out for a few months. That puts Julius Halaifonua, a seven-footer from New Zealand, into the lineup. He dropped 16 and nine boards in his first game in the starting five, but it was against Wagner.

Playing Dayton is a different beast.

I'm less concerned about Georgetown's worse shooting than Dayton's. Hear me out — Dayton shoots it and it has very few great shooters. Georgetown is self aware; the Hoyas know shooting is far from their strength. I expect that to play a role here.

Dayton Basketball

It feels like a fairly big season for Anthony Grant at Dayton. Last year, the Flyers missed the NCAA Tournament, and beating Georgetown would be a nice step in the right direction.

Dayton already beat one Big East team this year — Marquette in overtime last week. The Flyers' defense led the way, as it has all year. They rank 24th in defensive efficiency and pressure ball-handlers often.

The Flyers' pressure leads to their terrific 24% turnover rate, which Marquette saw firsthand, turning it over 20 times.

I'm not very sold on Dayton's offense, though. In the half-court, Dayton winds up shooting 3s — 42% of its shots come from downtown. The problem is, most of the lineup is better at driving than shooting.

Javon Bennett leads Dayton with 16.5 points per game. He's a shifty guard that keeps the ball on a string, but he's shooting 26% from deep. It's the biggest role he's had at Dayton, so his shot volume is up. He's just not a great shooter.

Jordan Derkack is a stud defender, and he's the type of player teams let launch from 3.

Keonte Jones is a supreme athlete with all the glue guy intangibles. He clearly lacks confidence, though, as he's taken just seven 3s.

That leaves seven-footer Amael L'Etang and skilled southpaw De'Shayne Montgomery as the two most reliable Flyers shooters.

That's a strong roster, but it features too many non-shooters. Over the course of the year, that'll sting them versus opponents with stingy on-ball defense.

Georgetown vs. Dayton Betting Analysis

I'm rolling with the Hoyas here. I think their ability to hold onto the ball will confuse Dayton. How do the Flyers respond to not forcing turnovers? That's an area Georgetown can take advantage of.

I also think Georgetown is just underrated. Even without Iwuchukwu, I view it as a top-50 team in America. This game isn't priced as such.

My Pick: Georgetown -2.5 (Play to -3.5)
