Kansas State vs Creighton College Basketball Betting Preview

Kansas State and Creighton meet in a pivotal non-conference match that could go a long way towards both teams’ hopes for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Wildcats’ hot start has devolved into a disaster, with a recent four-game losing skid that included a home loss to Bowling Green.

Creighton hasn’t looked good at all and lost one of its key players, Jackson McAndrew, to injury for the year. The Bluejays are 0-4 straight-up and against the spread against top-tier competition and have only a neutral-site win over mediocre Oregon on their resume.

Kansas State is playing faster than ever under Jerome Tang, and that has a lot to do with All-American point guard PJ Haggerty. Haggerty fuels a high-octane offense that launches triples and plays in the open floor. In the halfcourt, the Wildcats rely on him to create off the bounce, score himself, or find shooters for spot-up looks.

Creighton’s defense is designed to defend the arc, ranking fourth nationally in 3-point rate allowed, but the Jays can be beaten at the rim. Without Ryan Kalkbrenner, Creighton has struggled mightily, ranking 315th in block rate.

That inability to protect the rim is made worse by an inability to create turnovers (329th in turnover rate), meaning guys like Haggerty and fellow guard David Castillo can pretty much get to wherever they want on the floor.

The Jays have also been chewed up and spit out in ball screen action.

The good news is Kansas State really doesn’t want to beat its opponents at the rim and will absolutely still bomb away from deep and settle for jumpers.

On the other end, Creighton will be opportunistic in transition but ultimately settle into a half-court offense that plays through Owen Freeman on the block. Kansas State has undersized Khamari McGriff and the hilarious Dorin Buca (watch him play, you’ll get it) to throw at Freeman, which shouldn’t intimidate the Jays much despite their shot-blocking prowess.

Creighton’s offense can be held back by an inefficient point guard in Nik Graves (he’s just not good enough to be a starter at this level for a good team), and the offense devolves too much into isolation ball from Graves, Josh Dix, and Blake Harper.

But the Wildcats are not a good defensive team, so perhaps this weakness won’t be exploited.

The tipping points in this game are the coaching and the venue.

Doug McDermott has a significant coaching edge over Tang, and Creighton’s home court is strong.

A desperate Jays team backed by a raucous crowd should be enough for them to overcome the spread and send the Wildcats packing.

My Pick: Creighton -3.5 (Play to -4)
