Loyola Chicago vs Davidson College Basketball Betting Preview

Loyola Chicago Basketball

Loyola Chicago was able to secure a home win this week against La Salle, snapping a nine-game losing streak in A-10 play. The Ramblers have been one of the most disappointing teams in college basketball this season, as head coach Drew Valentine hasn't seen anything work on either end of the floor.

The Ramblers turn the ball over too frequently on offense, ranking 328th nationally in turnover percentage. Loyola likes to shoot a lot of 3-point shots, with Deywilk Tavarez and Kayde Dotson getting the majority of the looks.

The issue has been inconsistent shooting, and when the shots aren't falling, the offense isn’t scoring.

Justin Moore leads the team in scoring, averaging 11.8 points per contest, but more players are getting rotated in as Loyola continues to try to find the right combination to unlock more scoring.

However, at 6-18, it might be too late to salvage this season.

Defensively, the Ramblers have struggled, as teams are nailing 38% of their 3-point attempts. That puts Loyola Chicago in the bottom 20 of all of college basketball in 3-point defense.

The stop unit isn't generating turnovers, and teams are able to execute in the half-court at a higher-than-average success rate.

I expect continued struggles on the road against Davidson.

The Wildcats have had an up-and-down season with a 13-9 overall record. This is one of the streakiest teams in the A-10, as on any given night, the Wildcats could score 90 points and win in blowout fashion, or they could give up 90 points and lose badly.

The sporadic nature of play has made Davidson a tough team to get a read on, but this isn't a team ready to seriously threaten the major players at the top of the A-10.

Just two Wildcats average double figures in scoring, and the team is led by Roberts Blums, who averages 11.5 points per contest. Josh Scovens scores 10.7 points per game, and a cast of other contributors chip in between six and nine points per game.

The design of the Davidson offense should be familiar, as the Wildcats have run this motion offense for years. It requires unselfish play and, as a result, we've seen seven players tally at least 20 assists this season.

The defense has been solid, as the Wildcats do a decent job of forcing turnovers and forcing opponents to be methodical on offense.

Loyola Chicago vs. Davidson Betting Analysis

I'm going to lay it with the Wildcats here.

The Davidson offense is very hard to prepare for and even harder to defend against in live action. In the first meeting, a 15-point Wildcat win, Parker Friedrichsen got hot from 3-point range and scored 27 points. Blums was efficient, and the 3-point shots were falling for Davidson, which was also able to secure 10 offensive rebounds.

Second-chance opportunities are viscous to experience against the Wildcats, and if they can replicate that success on Friday, Davidson should put up some points.

Loyola Chicago has played terribly on the road this season, losing all but one game by double digits. I haven’t seen enough effective shooting from the Ramblers, and the defense isn't strong enough to withstand long stretches without scoring.

The Wildcats haven’t played exquisite basketball of late, but the losses have come against VCU, George Mason and Saint Louis — three of the better teams in the A-10. I have been impressed with how the Wildcats have played against the rest of the league, and I think we'll see enough effectiveness from their offense to separate in the second half.

My Pick: Davidson -11.5 (Play to -13)
