Miami (OH) vs Buffalo College Basketball Betting Preview
Miami (OH) Basketball
Miami (OH) remains undefeated entering this one, as the RedHawks have grabbed the college basketball world’s attention seemingly on a nightly basis. With a mark of 22-0, the RedHawks are closing in on potential at-large discussions for the NCAA Tournament. However, they're also starting to get everybody else’s best shot.
Three straight squeaker performances preceded Saturday’s 85-61 home win against Northern Illinois, but the RedHawks were far from dominant against the Huskies.
Miami (OH) trailed by double digits in the first half and was down five in the second half before securing two separate scoring runs of 18-2 and 15-0 to blow it open.
The Miami (OH) offense continues to operate at a high level in MAC play, as the RedHawks boast the best unit in the conference, and it's not particularly close. Brant Byers and Peter Suder continue to shoot the ball well and Eian Elmer has stepped up his scoring input significantly in the second half of the season.
Antwone Woolfolk has been a consistent presence down low on both ends of the floor, and while not completely consistent, the defense has shown that it can get stops in bunches to help aid in games getting blown open.
Buffalo Basketball
Buffalo comes into this one losers of six of its last seven contests, as a 13-2 start to the season has been hampered by ineffective defense in MAC play.
The Bulls aren’t forcing turnovers, can't defend the post area and routinely give up 80 or more points to less efficient opponents.
Tim Oboh hasn't been as aggressive on the glass, and Ezra McKenna has seen his defensive effectiveness dwindle in reserve duty. This defense should struggle in this game.
The offense is going to be carried by Daniel Freitag and Ryan Sabol, who average 20 and 18 points per game, respectively. Noah Batchelor leads the Bulls in rebounding and scored a season-high 16 points in a close loss against UMass. However, there aren't a ton of options beyond that.
Buffalo did manage to knock down 13 3-point shots in the first meeting between these two, while also getting to the line for 23 free-throw attempts.
Miami (OH) should be laser-focused and ready to go, especially given how close the first matchup between these two played out.
Miami (OH) vs. Buffalo Betting Analysis
This line opened Miami -4.5 with a total set at 164.5. With the spread and total where it is set, the Miami team total should be 84.5 when those markets open up. I like the Miami (OH) team total over.
Miami (OH) scored 105 points in the last matchup while shredding Buffalo inside the arc. It shot 25-of-37 from 2-point range and should have a decided advantage out of the post in this matchup. Woolfolk and Byers are really shooting the ball well, and with the way the offense operates out of the half-court, open shots should be found.
Miami (OH) is an excellent passing team and has seen its efficiency increase in MAC play with its ability to make extra passes and get to the line. It's getting to the foul stripe more than any other team in the conference, and we saw this play out in the first meeting, as the RedHawks shot 26 foul shots.
Buffalo is going to get to the foul line in this one as well, and if the Bulls get hot from 3-point range — as they did against Miami (OH) in the first meeting (as well as with a stunning road upset of Bowling Green last week) — the Bulls are going to score points.
The Bulls have increased their tempo a bit since entering MAC play while seeing their games average 69 total possessions, up from 66 in the non-conference portion of their schedule.
The first matchup went to overtime tied at 88 and finished 105-102. I won't call for the game to be that high scoring this time around, but I believe Miami (OH) will exceed its point total.
The RedHawks have scored 85 or more points in seven consecutive games, and I expect this game to be close throughout, with possible late-game fouling factored into the equation.
At the end of the day, I don't trust the Buffalo defense to procure stops, and Miami (OH) has ratcheted up the offensive efficiency even higher over the past three weeks.
My Pick: Miami (OH) Team Total Over (85.5 or Better)
