Providence vs Butler Game Picks and Predictions
Big East play kicks off Saturday, a merciful end to what has been an atrocious non-conference experience for the league.
Outside of UConn (and maybe Seton Hall), the Big East has largely underperformed expectations and looks on track to get just two or three bids to the NCAA Tournament.
Providence likely can’t get there barring a magical conference run, as the Friars are 0-4 against top 100 competition (1-3 ATS). Butler has a puncher’s chance despite its recent loss to Boise State, but there’s very little room for error in conference play.
This game should be extremely up-tempo, as both teams are suddenly running and gunning like their hair is on fire.
Providence has ramped up its pace after its hire of assistant coach Bryan Tibaldi, leading to — by far — the best offense of the Kim English era. Likewise, Butler ranks in the top 25 in adjusted offensive tempo, easily Thad Matta’s fastest team since 2015 Ohio State.
Offensively, Providence looks to score in transition and then settles into a ball-screen dominant attack that features sensational transfer Jason Edwards and freshman phenom Stefan Vaaks.
On the other end, Providence’s defense has been a sieve, and Butler can light it up on the run and from deep.
Butler has been below average at stopping transition this year, per Synergy, but the Dogs have been among the nation’s best in defending the pick-and-roll. A versatile wing corps has led the way.
The Bulldogs also dominate the offensive glass, ranking 13th nationally in offensive rebounding rate.
They should win that battle against Providence, as well as majority of the hustle plays, leading to extra possessions. Their rim attack could be thwarted by big man Oswin Erhunmwunse, who ranks fourth nationally in block rate, but there’s little depth behind him in the frontcourt.
Butler is a lean on the side, but the play in this game is the over.
With the way both teams look to run, their overall deficiencies on defense and the offensive talent each possesses, we should see a high scoring game.
My Pick: Over 169
