Santa Clara vs Kentucky College Basketball Betting Preview

Santa Clara Basketball
Santa Clara comes into this one after getting hot down the stretch in WCC play. Santa Clara was able to elevate to a clear contender in its conference, going 15-3 in league play and advancing to the WCC title game, where it competed well against Gonzaga.
Herb Sendek has the Broncos playing with great confidence, and I believe he has a team capable of making some noise in the dance.
Elijah Mahi and Christian Hammond are an electric scoring duo that combines to score 29.7 points per game for the Broncos.
The stylistic approach the Broncos operate under allows for any one of a number of players to handle the ball without relying on a true point.
Six players have at least 60 assists for Santa Clara and this team shares the ball really well. The Broncos are great on the offensive glass and their size matches up well with Kentucky.
The Santa Clara defense has also done well this season in limiting 3-point looks and the pressure applied forces opponent turnovers at a rate of 22nd-most in the country.
Santa Clara does give up easy looks inside and struggles at times with sending its opponent to the stripe far too frequently. If Kentucky can take care of the ball here, the Wildcats will have opportunities to get good looks in the paint.
Kentucky Basketball
Kentucky has been fairly inconsistent this season, as the Wildcats have had plenty of chances in games against excellent competition.
The W have great wins over Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Arkansas and St. John's but they also have four losses by 15 points or more this season. The Wildcats were able to find a little momentum in the SEC Tournament last week and have the talent to make some noise in the NCAA Tournament if they can play with some consistency.
The offense is led in scoring by Oweh Otega, who averages 18.3 points per game for Kentucky. Otega can hit the 3 in addition to getting good looks in the lane while obtaining trips to the stripe.
Denzel Aberdeen scores 13.2 points and is the team's leading facilitator, averaging 3.6 assists per contest. Four others average at least eight points for Kentucky and the Wildcats are excellent at crashing the glass and getting second-chance points.
The defense isn’t going to force a ton of turnovers, but the Wildcats defend the 3-point line well. Malachi Moreno and Mouhamed Dioubate are excellent around the rim at blocking or altering shot attempts.
This is going to be a battle down low, and if Kentucky can keep Santa Clara off the stripe, it should be in good shape here.

Santa Clara vs. Kentucky Pick, Betting Analysis
This line opened with Kentucky laying 3.5 points with a total set at 160.5. I'm going to take the under here.
This Kentucky defense ranks 27th nationally in defensive efficiency and will be one of the best that Santa Clara has taken on all season.
Half of the Broncos' shots are going to come from deep, but Kentucky can take that away with how it guards the 3-point arc. I think we will see Santa Clara become more deliberate on the offensive end and take longer possessions against the Wildcats.
The Broncos have also been idle for 10 days, so it'll take some time for their shooters to get in rhythm. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a slower start here from Santa Clara.
I don't think we'll see the Broncos get to the line a ton in this game, as they rank 359th in offensive free-throw rate. One shooting lull will go a long way in helping this game trend under.
Kentucky struggled offensively at times this season, especially against some of the better defenses it faced.
The Wildcats are a mediocre 3-point shooting team outside of Collin Chandler, and Santa Clara has a fairly respectable defense in defending the outside shot. I think the length of Santa Clara can cause problems for Kentucky in getting open looks from deep.
I think the pace will mimic what we saw from Santa Clara in the WCC Championship, where Sendek really throttled down the tempo.
I think we see meaningful possessions in the last five minutes of a close game, and the pace will be there for this one to finish under the posted total.
My Pick: Under 159.5
