Seton Hall vs Butler College Basketball Betting Preview
Seton Hall Basketball
It's been an up-and-down season for Seton Hall, but the Pirates can still claw their way into the NCAA Tournament with a strong finish down the stretch.
Shaheen Holloway's team is elite defensively, but it really struggles to score the basketball.
To add context with some numbers, the Hall is outside the top 145 in KenPom's adjusted offensive efficiency rankings, but it cracks the top 15 on the defensive end.
The Pirates bounced back earlier in the week with a home win over Providence, which snapped a two-game losing streak.
The offensive output was much higher in that game with star guard Adam "Budd" Clark going for 31 and AJ Staton-McCray also having an efficient night.
Clark is a flat-out bucket getter, but he needs help from the other Pirates guards for this team to be able to score it well enough to hang with the Big East's top three of Villanova, St John's and UConn.
Seton Hall lost to Butler at home back in January, so this is a revenge opportunity at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
The swarming defensive pressure the Pirates often bring out should give a banged-up Butler team plenty of trouble, and I think there will be some opportunities to force some turnovers in the process.
Hall should also be able to use the offensive glass to its advantage, as it's a very good rebounding team and Butler struggles a bit on the backboards.
Given the Bulldogs' recent struggles, getting off to a fast start and taking control of this game early on will be important to take the Butler crowd out of it.
Butler Basketball
The injuries to guards Azavier Robinson and Jalen Jackson were absolute killers to a Butler basketball team that was playing really well to begin the season.
The Bulldogs haven't had the depth pieces in the backcourt to make up for those losses and are on a five-game losing streak as a result.
They've still been competitive during the skid, but they've been unable to make the key plays in the second halves of games on either end of the floor.
Thad Matta has long been an elite coach, but this team doesn't have the chops on the defensive end that so many of his teams over the years have had.
Opponents are regularly getting to the rim with ease against the Bulldogs' defense, and there aren't really any shot blockers at the rim to put up much resistance when that happens.
Seton Hall is certainly not elite offensively and the Bulldogs were able to outscore it in the first meeting, but this is simply not the same Bulldogs team a month later.
To break the losing streak and get back in the win column, Butler must play harder on the defensive end, and it's probably going to need to make double-digit 3s against a Pirates defense that makes it hard to score in the paint.
Seton Hall vs. Butler Betting Analysis
One team in Seton Hall still has plenty to play for and one team in Butler appears to be in free fall mode right now.
Toss in the fact that this is a revenge game for the Pirates, and I really like Hall in this spot to win and cover on the road.
I think you'll see Holloway's team come out with a spirited effort in this one, and Butler just doesn't have the personnel right now to keep pace.
The injuries have added up, and Matta's team appears to have lost the plot a bit.
Give me the Pirates to cover this number, and I wouldn't be shocked at all if they win it convincingly.
My Pick: Seton Hall -3 or Better
