Utah State vs New Mexico College Basketball Betting Preview

Utah State Basketball

Utah State is trending towards NCAA Tournament lock status in year two under Jerrod Calhoun. The Aggies bounced back nicely from a two-game skid in mid-January, and after three straight wins, they now sit at 18-3 on the season.

Up to 31st overall on KenPom, this Utah State team is balanced, with the 43rd-most efficient offense and 38th-most efficient defense nationally.

The experienced backcourt of Mason Falslev and MJ Collins Jr. has been scoring efficiently all season long, and both could wind up on the all-league first team. This group gets balanced contributions all over the place, though.

Drake Allen is top-50 nationally in assist rate. Kolby King has excelled off the bench and is shooting 42% from deep. Plus, the lengthy Adlan Elamin has hit his stride lately as a connective two-way wing and is looking like a future NBA player.

Utah State is 10th nationally in 2-point percentage at 60.1%, and 31st nationally in offensive rebounding rate. The Aggies look best when the ball is zipping around, and they currently rank top-50 in the country in assist rate.

Defensively, this group is very disruptive, coming in at seventh nationally in steal rate.

This is a really fun, balanced squad out in Logan, Utah, and it's one that's undeniably been one of the best mid-majors in the sport.

New Mexico Basketball

Richard Pitino’s departure hasn’t stopped New Mexico basketball from being a fixture at the top of the Mountain West. First-year head coach Eric Olen has the Lobos 18-4 on the season and tied for first in the league.

Olen retained zero minutes from last season's roster, and still built a balanced team that was ready to compete from the jump.

The Lobos boast the 25th most efficient defense in the country, while coming in at 70th on the offensive end.

Freshman guard Jake Hall has been fantastic, and has especially hit his stride as of late. He’s averaging 19.6 points per game since January 6, and enters this one off of a season-high 27 points, connecting on 7-of-9 from long distance.

Croatian big man Tomislav Buljan has anchored this team on both ends of the floor and is top 10 nationally in both offensive and defensive rebounding rate.

This group is also great in the turnover department, ranking first in the Mountain West at taking care of the ball, and third-best at forcing giveaways.

Utah State vs. New Mexico Betting Analysis

Two 9-2 Mountain West teams square off in a high-quality battle. It’s a tough spot for Utah State, as New Mexico hasn’t lost at The Pit all season.

While the Aggies grade out as the slightly better team, the Lobos are right there and looking NCAA Tournament caliber as well.

With two similar-level teams, I definitely lean towards the team playing at home. I also see some matchup advantages for the Lobos, as they excel in areas where it’s more important to neutralize the Aggies.

Utah State looks best when it's forcing turnovers and creating second-chance opportunities. New Mexico takes great care of the ball and is second in the league in defensive rebounding.

I’ll lay the small number.

My Pick: New Mexico -1.5 (Play to -5)
