Wake Forest vs Virginia Tech College Basketball Betting Preview

Wake Forest Basketball

Wake Forest had a disappointing season, finishing 16-15 overall and 7-11 in the ACC. Every time it seemed the Demon Deacons took a step forward, they immediately took a step or two back.

Juke Harris has been awesome all season, averaging 21 points per game, including 31 points and 15 rebounds in the regular-season finale win against Cal.

Harris is a 6-foot-7 matchup problem for opponents. He uses his length to create separation from dribble hand-offs, allowing him to get to his spots. He shoots 53% 2 two off dribble hand-offs.

When Harris is off-ball, he's efficient coming off screens for catch-and-shoot 3s. On the year, he shoots 47% off that action.

Outside of Harris, Wake Forest has inconsistent production.

Myles Colvin is the second-leading scorer who gives WF either nothing or everything. In his last two games, Colvin has gone 4-of-20 from the field and 1-of-10 from deep after scoring 32 points against Syracuse on 7-of-8 shooting from long range.

Nate Calmese, who has missed nine out of the last 10 games, went through practice on Monday for Wake Forest and may give it a go for the game.

In Wake's 81-78 win over Virginia Tech in January, Calmese had a team-high 25 points, including the go-ahead triple to put Wake up 79-76 with less than 10 seconds left.

Calmese didn't play in the rematch, where Virginia Tech won by a score of 82-63.

Virginia Tech ended the regular season with a tough four-point loss to Virginia, prompting head coach Mike Young to ask the media, "What the [expletive] am I doing wrong?"

Five of Virginia Tech's 10 ACC losses have been by four points or less, including a three-point loss to Wake Forest back on Jan. 3.

The Hokies are on the outside looking in when it comes to March Madness, but a couple of wins in the ACC Tournament could swing them onto the right side of things.

Since the start of ACC play, VT has had a top-50 defense in the country, per Bart Torvik, holding teams to 31% from 3 with a defensive free-throw rate of 27.5%.

Five players score 11 or more points per game, but my favorite is Ben Hammond.

Since shooting 0-for-9 in a loss to NC State, Hammond has averaged 15 points and 2.5 steals per game.

His ability to make a defense off-balance due to his quickness in the half-court opens up scoring opportunities for him and his teammates.

Not many play harder than Hammond on the defensive side of the ball, either. The anticipation he plays with makes opponents hesitate to run their offenses.

Wake Forest vs Virginia Tech Pick, Betting Analysis

Wake Forest boasts a top-100 defense, per KenPom, but since Jan. 20, it ranks 197th in defensive efficiency while coming in at 328th in defensive turnover rate.

In its most recent matchup between these teams, VT had six players score in double figures. As a team, the Hokies racked up 20 assists to five turnovers in the 82-63 win.

Even if Calmese plays for Wake, he'll have his hands full trying to keep up with Hammond.

The Hokies will make a statement after their frustrating loss to Virginia and beat a depleted Wake Forest team.

My Pick: Virginia Tech -2.5
