I love this situational spot for Toledo.
Akron’s offense has been lights out the past two weeks, but the Zips played two horrific defenses in Duquesne and UAB.
Through the first two weeks (against Wyoming and Nebraska), the Zips couldn’t run the football.
Meanwhile, Toledo’s front seven has been lights out, allowing 62 rushing yards per game at 1.9 yards per carry over the past three games.
Ben Finley has played well over the past few weeks, but against horrendous secondaries.
Meanwhile, Toledo’s secondary ranks second nationally in Passing Downs EPA per Play allowed.
I don’t expect the Rockets to run the ball with any consistency or regularity, and I don’t expect them to have success throwing their way out of bad situations behind the sticks.
On the other side of the ball, the Akron front seven is going to be in some significant trouble on Saturday.
Head coach Jason Candle already got his annual loss as a double-digit favorite out of the way last week, and the Rockets are now in a revenge spot. Not to mention they still have all their preseason goals in front of them, but there’s no margin for error.
Ultimately, I think we see the Akron offense regress back to where it was in the first two weeks of the season, and that should lead to a blowout from a motivated Rockets squad.
