Cincinnati Bearcats Betting Preview: Claws Out

It was looking like the Bearcats could have been playoff-bound a few weeks ago. And yet, after three losses in a row, you can wipe those hopes away.

Two of the losses could be pinned on quarterback Brendan Sorsby, who, in reality, has had a wonderful season. But four of his five interceptions this season have come in the past three weeks.

Against both Arizona and Utah, he combined for a 42% completion rate, while bouncing back against BYU and throwing for 300 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Against BYU, the run game was totally stifled, as lead back Tawee Walker was limited to only nine yards on five carries. It was a total shocker because Cincinnati had one of the more prolific rushing attacks in the game, ranking eighth in Rushing Success Rate and 16th in EPA.

Through the air, Sorsby has helped the Bearcats reach a mark of 19th in Passing Success Rate and eighth in EPA, even after a disastrous game against Utah.

Cyrus Allen leads the Big 12 with 11 receiving touchdowns, and both Jeff Caldwell and Caleb Goodie have created separation at a high level, averaging over 15 yards per catch.

TCU Horned Frogs Betting Preview: Hoover Looking to Bounce Back

TCU just slid by Houston last week with a 17-14 win, but in the week prior, it got smoked by BYU by a score of 44-13.

It doesn’t help that quarterback Josh Hoover squandered plenty in these three weeks, throwing for a paltry seven interceptions.

Three last week, two the week before and two the week before. Not great.

It’s clear that once Hoover throws a pick, he becomes a full-on liability, trying to make too much happen at once. Whenever he gets pressured, he’s thrown five picks.

Of course, though, he’s still a solid passer despite his erraticness. He and wide receiver Eric McAlister have formed a fantastic connection, with McAlister leading the Big 12 with 1,020 receiving yards.

Not just that, but the run game has been pretty solid, even though the Horned Frogs rank 78th in Rushing Success Rate. The running back room is more of a committee with Kevorian Barnes, Jeremy Payne and Trent Battle all averaging 4.5 yards per carry or more.

What’s fascinating about TCU’s defense, though, is that it can be a little wishy-washy. The Frogs rank 61st in Success Rate allowed, but they have some massive difference-makers in their unit.

Kaleb Elarms-Orr leads the conference in solo tackles, and safeties Jamel Johnson and Bud Clark are tied for the conference lead in interceptions.

Cincinnati vs TCU Pick, Betting Analysis

Hold up a picture of the Cincinnati logo. Then face the logo in the mirror. Legend has it that the logo automatically turns to TCU and vice versa.

These teams are practically identical, and it just has the feeling of a tight-knit battle.

Our Action Network projections give this game an edge to TCU by 0.4 points, and the books have this with a nice, spaced-out three points.

With this game being played in Fort Worth, it makes sense as to why the Frogs are the favorites in this game. But I can really see this being a close game.

Throughout this season, Cincinnati overmatched most of its opponents. But in the past three games, Utah, Arizona and BYU significantly outmatched the Bearcats.

This time, Cincy meets its match in TCU. Neither program has a significant upgrade over the other.

Take the points here.

Pick: Cincinnati +3
