BYU Cougars Odds & Betting Guide — 2026 Season

BYU went 12-2 last season and lost to one opponent. Texas Tech beat the Cougars twice, by 22 and 27, and against everyone else BYU was perfect. Texas Tech is not on the 2026 regular-season schedule.

Where BYU stands

The 2025 season was among the best in program history by almost any measure. BYU reached 12 wins for the fifth time ever and the first since 2001. The Cougars recorded 10 victories over Power Four opponents, a program record, along with five wins over teams that finished with nine or more wins, also a record, and seven wins over teams with winning records, the second-most in school history. Their FBS opponents finished a combined 102-64.

It still was not enough for the College Football Playoff. BYU went 11-2 in 2024 and 12-2 in 2025 and missed both times, a 23-4 stretch without a Playoff berth.

Kalani Sitake enters his 11th season after turning down Penn State in December and signing a long-term extension. He won Big 12 Coach of the Year and the national Buddy Teevens Award, and he has produced double-digit win seasons in four of the past six years while going 57-20 since 2020.

Bear Bachmeier returns as the reason for optimism. He transferred from Stanford, arrived on campus in June without a spring practice, beat out two experienced backups and started all 14 games as a true freshman. He completed 65% of his throws for 3,033 yards with 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions, added more than 500 rushing yards and set a BYU record with 11 rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. He was the only true freshman in the country to lead a team to 12 wins.

Running back LJ Martin is back for his senior year after winning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year with 1,305 rushing yards. Aaron Roderick returns for a sixth season running the offense.

The one significant change is on defense. Jay Hill, who built the unit over three seasons, is gone, and Kelly Poppinga takes over as coordinator. Isaiah Glasker and Faletau Satuala return as the anchors.

The Big 12 held steady

The conference kept all 16 members for 2026, so pricing rests on two full years of the current alignment. Texas Tech, which went 12-2 with an 8-1 conference mark, remains the standard.

BYU's schedule is favorable in a specific and important way. The Cougars play nine conference games against Arizona, TCU, Iowa State, UCF, Arizona State, Utah, Baylor, Kansas and Cincinnati. Texas Tech is not among them. The only way BYU sees the team that beat it twice last season is in the Big 12 Championship Game.

Seven home games help further, including Arizona on Sept. 12, Iowa State on Oct. 9, Arizona State on Oct. 31, Baylor on Nov. 14 and Cincinnati on Nov. 28. The road slate brings Colorado State, TCU, UCF, No. 21 Utah and Kansas.

Then there is Oct. 17, when No. 4 Notre Dame visits LaVell Edwards Stadium in one of the largest home games in program history.

BYU 2026 futures odds

Books set the win total at 8.5, and Athlon's Big 12 preview took the over.

The résumé angle is the one worth understanding. BYU has spent two years assembling the kind of record that normally produces a Playoff berth and has been passed over both times. That history shapes how the market prices Cougars futures, and it cuts two ways. Playoff futures carry a real committee discount that may or may not be justified. Win-total and conference-title markets do not, because those settle on results rather than on perception.

The Notre Dame game is the single most valuable date on the schedule for that reason. Beating a top-five opponent at home in October is the kind of result BYU's previous résumés lacked, and it would change the Playoff conversation in a way that a ninth Big 12 win would not.

The case against the over is the defense. Hill built a unit that helped produce 23 wins in two years, and a first-year coordinator inheriting it is the most obvious variable. The schedule also stiffens: Notre Dame at home, road trips to Utah and TCU, and a Big 12 that is deeper than it was.

Betting BYU point spreads

A point spread bet turns on margin of victory rather than who wins.

Take the Oct. 17 home game against Notre Dame. These are illustrative prices, so pull live college football odds for the real number:

BYU covers by losing by seven or fewer, or by winning outright. Notre Dame covers by winning by eight or more. The -110 on each side is the vig: risk $1.10 to win $1.

The Cougars angle: BYU's two-year record has a strange shape. Across 2024 and 2025 the Cougars went 23-4, and in 2025 all four of the program's losses over that span came against a single opponent. Texas Tech won 29-7 and 34-7, both decisive, while BYU handled everyone else including Utah, TCU and Arizona on the road.

That pattern suggests a team with a very high floor and one specific matchup problem. For spread bettors it means BYU has been reliable as a favorite against the field and vulnerable only in a particular stylistic matchup. Whether Poppinga's defense changes either side of that is the question, and the against the spread standings will show it before the record does, since a defensive drop-off shows up in margins first.

An over/under asks whether the combined final score lands above or below the posted number. At 51.5, a 31-24 final goes over and a 27-24 final stays under.

BYU's offense runs through two players who both produce on the ground. Bachmeier ran for more than 500 yards and 11 touchdowns as a freshman, and Martin added 1,305. A quarterback-and-back rushing combination that productive shortens games by holding possession, which suppresses totals relative to what the scoring average alone would suggest.

The scheduling detail to watch is the Oct. 9 home game against Iowa State, which kicks at 10:15 p.m. Eastern on a Friday. That is a late national window on a weeknight, and those markets open later and move on smaller amounts of money than Saturday afternoon numbers. It is the one spot on the schedule where books are most likely to disagree with each other.

The other variable is the new defensive coordinator. Totals will open priced off a defense that no longer has the coach who built it, and September will reveal whether that matters before the market adjusts. Betting the BYU moneyline

A moneyline bet is a bet on who wins outright. Margin is irrelevant.

Convert to implied probability and the margin shows. BYU at -280 breaks even around 73.7%; the opponent at +225 breaks even around 30.8%. Those sum past 100%, and the excess is the sportsbook's cut.

That reliability is what makes the defensive coordinator change worth monitoring, since it is the most plausible reason for the pattern to break.

Bachmeier is the most interesting prop board in the Big 12 for a specific reason: his 2025 numbers were produced by a player who arrived in June and never took a spring rep. He completed 65% of his throws for 3,033 yards while learning the offense in real time, and he now enters year two with a full offseason for the first time.

Oddsmakers pricing his lines have to decide how much of that improvement to build in. Passing volume is capped by BYU's run-heavy identity, so yardage props may look modest, but efficiency markets like completion percentage and interception totals are where a second-year jump typically shows.

His rushing props deserve separate attention. Eleven rushing touchdowns set a BYU record for a quarterback, and anytime-touchdown markets often price mobile quarterbacks off passing reputation rather than goal-line usage.

Martin's rushing lines are the steadiest on the roster. A returning conference Offensive Player of the Year with 1,305 yards behind a veteran offensive line is about as projectable as college football gets, though the same red-zone competition with Bachmeier caps his touchdown ceiling.
