South Carolina Gamecocks Betting Preview: Polar Opposite to Last Season

Under the bright lights at Death Valley, South Carolina, is definitely in for a tall task.

Having the bye last week couldn’t have come at a better time for the Gamecocks, as it allowed everyone to rest and recover from the first five weeks.

For those who don’t remember, LaNorris Sellers really broke out onto the scene last season after the Gamecocks nearly handed LSU a loss. He ran 10 times for 88 yards and a touchdown, and it seemed like Brian Kelly had no answer for him.

However, the big difference between last year and this year is that Sellers has been using his arm a whole lot more to get yardage since the run game hasn’t been very efficient.

Nyck Harbor and Vandrevius Jacobs have combined for 39 total targets out of the team’s 77, just under half of all targets thrown. Donovan Murph is also a sneaky option if both Harbor and Jacobs are covered.

South Carolina runs the ball at a top-25 rate, but overall, is tied for 102nd in the FBS in Rushing Success Rate.

Rahsul Faison and Oscar Adaway have been nothing more than pedestrian rushers because, out of all rushers, Sellers boasts the highest PFF grade.

LSU Tigers Betting Preview: Nussmeier in His Own Way

Well, luckily for LSU, its program is looking a tad different this season.

Kelly acknowledged how despondent his program looked stopping the run last season, which is why he’s planning to make Sellers throw the ball as much as possible.

Running QBs made the Tigers’ lives a living nightmare last season, and they didn’t look great against Ole Miss’ Trinidad Chambliss two weeks ago.

What will be interesting to see is how much LSU’s secondary breaks out into coverage. The Tigers have some of the best defensive backs in the country in Mansoor Delane, A.J. Haulcy and Dashawn Spears.

On offense, though, it’s continuously a worry for me. Garrett Nussmeier is ultra-talented, but his mental mistakes are what get him in trouble.

I vividly remember how he started last season. In the first four weeks, he attempted 160 passes and managed to throw only two interceptions (one to South Carolina). The rest of the season, it seemed like he was trying to make something out of nothing.

He had 10 interceptions to finish off the season, resulting in 12 total to lead the SEC.

Now, he has problems. His starting left guard, Paul Mubenga, will be out, and his leading receiver, Aaron Anderson, is listed as questionable as of writing.

South Carolina vs LSU Pick, Betting Analysis

I’m going to take the points with South Carolina here.

All season, I’ve yet to see anything that makes me go “wow” with LSU. I’ve always been a critic of Kelly, and it was rather rich to watch him blow up on a reporter after his team barely snuck by Florida.

Because, yeah, even though you won the game, you didn’t look great doing it.

That doesn’t mean I think South Carolina is the perfect program either, but I think LSU has had a lot of luck so far this season.

It barely beat a bad Clemson team, neglected to dominate Louisiana Tech, kept Florida alive in the next game, dominated FCS Southeastern Louisiana and then fell to Ole Miss.

LSU will always get the respect from the books, but the performance on the field has been subpar at best.

Take the Gamecocks to cover here.

Pick: South Carolina +9
