Cyberattacks are a growing threat that extends beyond individual companies, affecting entire industries, including casinos.

Boyd Gaming recently revealed it was hit by a cyberattack. The Las Vegas-based company runs many casinos in the city and across the United States, employing over 16,000 people.

In the recent attack, reported to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), an unauthorized person gained unauthorized access to the company's computer systems and stole sensitive data. The stolen data primarily included information about employees, although a small number of other individuals' details were also affected.

The attack did not disrupt operations, unlike the one at Jackpot Junction Casino. The Minnesota casino was temporarily shut down last spring following an attack. At the recent TribalNet Conference, attendees not only had the opportunity to view the Grand Sierra Resort expansion project, but also participated in a comprehensive discussion about cybersecurity.

The cyberattack on Boyd Gaming comes on the heels of another incident involving Nevada's state computer systems. The network suffered a significant ransomware attack, causing disruptions in government offices and services.

What Data Was Stolen?

While Boyd Gaming has not detailed every aspect of the stolen data, incidents like this typically involve Personal Identifiable Information (PII).

This could include names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and birthdates. Other stolen data might encompass employment details such as job titles, salaries, and contact information. In some cases, financial or benefits information stored in HR systems might also be affected.

A filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission said Boyd Gaming recently experienced a cybersecurity incident in which “an unauthorized third party accessed our internal IT system.

Despite the magnitude of the breach, Boyd Gaming reassures stakeholders that its casino operations remain unaffected.

The company acted fast, enlisting external cybersecurity experts and collaborating with federal law enforcement to tackle it. Boyd Gaming has notified those affected and continues to strengthen its defenses.

The company also has a comprehensive cybersecurity insurance policy, which is expected to cover most costs associated with this incident, including response efforts, forensic investigations, legal claims, and any potential regulatory fines.

A Wider Threat to the Casino Industry

Boyd Gaming's incident is not isolated; Las Vegas casinos have increasingly found themselves in the crosshairs of cybercriminals. There was also an IT disruption at Jake's 58 Casino Hotel in Islandia, New York, earlier this year.

The allure for these criminals is evident: casinos handle enormous quantities of sensitive data and financial transactions. Cyberattacks across the gambling industry, particularly targeting online platforms, have seen a sharp rise.

a casino in minnesota was the target of a recent cyberattack, but casinos are considered to attractive targets because of the money and sensitive data they handle.
Casinos are often considered to be attractive targets for cybercriminals.

Techniques such as Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, ransomware, and phishing are becoming more sophisticated and common, heightening the threat landscape.

Guarding Against Future Cyber Threats

The incident underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures, especially in data-heavy industries like gaming.

Through vigilant monitoring, expert partnerships, and comprehensive insurance coverage, Boyd Gaming aims to mitigate the impact of such attacks in the future.

While Boyd Gaming navigates the aftermath of its recent breach, the situation highlights the urgent need for continuous vigilance and preparedness against cyber threats. As the digital landscape evolves, so too must the strategies to safeguard sensitive data and protect both businesses and individuals.
