Northwestern gets a trip to Evanston's brand-new Ryan Field for its stadium debut, but the real story heading into Friday is how bad Penn State looks after last week. I had Wisconsin in that game on Saturday and came away stunned by what I saw. Not because the Badgers were impressive, but because they didn't have to be.
Wisconsin's offense was genuinely one of the worst units I've watched all year, yet they still walked into Beaver Stadium and beat a Top-15 Penn State squad. The Nittany Lions built a 17-0 lead almost entirely on defense, forcing three interceptions (one pick-six, another in great field position), but the offense never found a rhythm and let Wisconsin claw back for the win. If an offense that bad can expose Penn State, that's a massive red flag heading into a Big Ten slate that only gets tougher.
Northwestern, meanwhile, is coming off a game that should give its backers real confidence. The Wildcats went on the road to Indiana for a date with the defending champs and hung with them for four quarters, trailing just 22-20 inside the final five minutes before Indiana finally pulled away late. That's a competitive, well-coached team that doesn't fold, and it's a much better level of fight than what we just watched from Penn State's offense.
Given Penn State's offensive struggles are fresh and real, and Northwestern just proved it can play tight, physical football against elite competition, Northwestern's moneyline looks like solid value here.
