Idaho Sports Betting October 2026

ID Online Sports Betting Legalization

Idaho

Sports betting is not legal in Idaho, and no bill to legalize it has been introduced in the Idaho Legislature as of 2026.

Idaho's constitution states that gambling is contrary to public policy and is strictly prohibited, lists exactly three exceptions - the state lottery, pari-mutuel betting and charitable bingo and raffles. Sports wagering is not among them.

Daily fantasy sports are unavailable too, after DraftKings and FanDuel withdrew from the state in 2016 following an Attorney General opinion. Idahoans who want to bet legally have to cross a state line, and the three nearest options, Nevada, Washington and Oregon all work in three completely different ways.

Here are sports betting mistakes to avoid.

What do Idaho tribal casinos offer, and could they add sports betting?

Idaho tribal casinos only offer two sorts of gambling for visitors, electronic gaming machines and bingo-based games. There are no sportsbooks, and no house-banked table games either.

Casino

Location

What it offers

Coeur d'Alene Casino Resort

Worley

The largest gaming venue in Idaho - more than 1,100 gaming machines, a hotel resort, an 18-hole golf course and a spa. No sportsbook.

Clearwater River Casino & Lodge

Lewiston

Around 600 gaming machines, a lodge and an RV park. No sportsbook.

What you will not find is blackjack, roulette or craps, because Article III, Section 20(2) prohibits them explicitly. The machines you will find exist because of the 2002 initiative's definitional carve-out.

Could tribal casinos offer sports betting in the future?

Tribal gaming operates under the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, which broadly permits a tribe to offer a class of gaming only where that class is permitted elsewhere in the state. So the sequence is:

  1. Idaho changes its own law - by constitutional amendment or by a statutory initiative on the 2002 model.
  2. Only then can the State-Tribal Gaming Compact be amended to include sports wagering, negotiated tribe by tribe.

The tribes are not the obstacle. Idaho's constitution is. The 2002 initiative was itself a tribal-backed campaign to change state law precisely so the compact could be amended - the same sequence would have to happen again.

How does Idaho compare to Washington?

Washington shows what the Idaho model could look like if the state-level position changed, because Washington legalized sports betting exclusively through tribal casinos rather than as a commercial market.

  • Washington has 14 tribal casino sportsbooks. Mobile betting works, but only while you are on casino property.
  • There is no statewide mobile app in Washington, no licensed online casino and no legal daily fantasy sports.
  • Washington tribes have consistently opposed commercial or statewide mobile expansion that would divert revenue from tribal casinos, and have blocked legislative attempts to introduce it.
  • Washington permits wagering on in-state college teams at tribal casinos but prohibits betting on the performance of individual student athletes.

The practical difference for an Idahoan is that Washington is somewhere you can go and bet today. Idaho is not.

What responsible gambling tools are available in Idaho?

Idaho has no legal sports betting, and therefore no state gambling regulator overseeing sportsbooks and no statewide self-exclusion scheme covering them.

  • National Problem Gambling Helpline: 1-800-522-4700. Free, confidential, 24 hours a day by phone, text and chat.
  • Idaho Careline: dial 2-1-1, endorsed by the Idaho Lottery as a route to local support and referrals.
  • The Idaho Council on Problem Gambling provides referrals to treatment services across the state.
  • Gamblers Anonymous holds meetings in Boise and other Idaho cities.
  • The Idaho Lottery operates a voluntary self-exclusion program - but it covers lottery products only and does not extend to sportsbooks in other states.

If you bet in Nevada, Washington, Oregon or Wyoming, you enroll in that state's self-exclusion program. Residency is not a barrier, and enrolling in one does not cover another. Every licensed operator also offers account-level deposit limits and self-exclusion that work immediately from anywhere, including from inside Idaho - if you need to act today, that is the fastest route.

All of these helplines take calls from family members, not only from people gambling themselves.

Where can an Idaho resident legally bet?

Idaho borders six states and five allow some form of legal sports betting. The three closest work in genuinely different ways, so the right choice depends on how you want to bet rather than which border is nearest.

Nevada gives you the most choice but requires one in-person casino visit to activate a mobile account. Washington is simplest for a sportsbook counter and a day out, but its apps stop working when you leave the property. Oregon is the most practical if you just want to bet on your phone - but there is only one app and it does not offer college sports.

Sports betting requires you to be 21 or over and physically located in a state where it is legal. Gambling problem? Call the National Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-522-4700, available 24/7 by phone, text and chat, or dial 2-1-1 for the Idaho Careline.

Which border is closest from where you live?

Idaho is long and narrow, so the answer changes completely by region.

  • Coeur d'Alene and north Idaho - Washington, and it is the shortest trip available to any Idahoan. Northern Quest Resort & Casino in Airway Heights, run by the Kalispel Tribe, is around 41 miles away, roughly a 45-minute drive. Its Turf Club Sports Book was the first legal sportsbook in Spokane County.

  • Boise and southwest Idaho - Oregon, a short drive west along the I-84 corridor, and the most practical option because Oregon betting works statewide. You do not need to reach a casino.

  • South-central Idaho - Nevada. Jackpot sits directly on the border on US-93 and exists largely to serve southern Idaho. Cactus Pete's Resort Casino has been there since 1956 and runs a full-service sportsbook alongside around 500 slot machines and 14 table games.

  • Idaho Falls, Pocatello and east Idaho - Wyoming, which is the overlooked option and often the best. Wyoming has been online-only since September 1, 2021, with five operators holding active permits: DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars and Fanatics. No retail sportsbooks means no casino visit and no in-person registration.

Two neighbors to rule out. Montana allows betting only on the premises of licensed lottery retailers through a single state-run app, so you cannot bet freely once across. Utah has no legal gambling at all, and in 2026 passed HB 243 explicitly banning proposition betting to close perceived loopholes.

Does the trip make sense for small stakes?

It depends on where you start, and the contrast is stark.

From Coeur d'Alene, a round trip to Northern Quest is around 82 miles and about an hour and a half of driving. That is a manageable afternoon, and if you are going for the food and the screens then the betting is part of the entertainment.

From the same starting point, Jackpot, Nevada is about 632 miles by road and over ten hours each way. No stake a recreational bettor would place justifies that. Nevada only makes sense from Idaho if you live in the south or are already traveling.

Generally crossing a border is worth it when the trip has a purpose beyond the wager, or when you live close enough that the journey costs almost nothing. It is never worth doing to chase a loss.

What happens to my account when I drive home?

  • Bets already placed settle normally, wherever you are when the game finishes.

  • Winnings are credited as usual and you can withdraw them from Idaho.

  • You cannot place new bets until you are back in a state where betting is legal.

  • You do not need a separate account per state - the major operators run one account nationally. Register and fund it before you travel.

  • Geolocation is checked at the moment of the bet, not just at login, and it is precise. Being nearly across a border is not across it. If a check fails after you have crossed, close the app fully and reopen it, and check no VPN is running.

What tax do Idaho residents pay on out-of-state betting winnings?

Idaho taxes gambling winnings as income at a flat 5.3%, including winnings from bets placed in other states. That rate has applied since House Bill 40 was enacted in March 2025, reducing Idaho's individual income tax rate from 5.695%.

Where you have paid income tax to another state on the same winnings, Idaho allows a credit. The destinations Idahoans actually use complicate that considerably.

If you bet in...

That state's income tax

What it means for your Idaho return

Nevada

None

Nothing withheld. You owe Idaho the full 5.3% with no credit to offset.

Washington

No personal income tax

Same position. Idaho taxes the winnings in full.

Wyoming

None

Same position again.

Oregon

Yes

May tax the winnings, giving you something to set against your Idaho liability.

The counter-intuitive result is that the closest and most convenient options - Nevada, Washington and Wyoming, none of which taxes personal income - leave you with the largest Idaho bill, because nothing has been paid along the way.

Federal changes for 2026

  • Gambling losses are deductible at only 90% of value for tax years beginning January 1, 2026, still capped at your winnings - so you can owe federal tax on a break-even year.
  • The general W-2G reporting threshold is now $2,000; 24% withholding applies at $5,000 or more at odds of 300-1 or longer.
  • You report gross winnings, not net profit.
  • You only get the loss deduction if you itemize. Most filers take the standard deduction and get none.

A worked example

Win $4,000 across a season in Nevada and Wyoming and lose $3,000 getting there.

You report the full $4,000, not the $1,000 profit. Itemizing, you may deduct 90% of losses - $2,700 - leaving $1,300 taxable at federal level. Taking the standard deduction, you deduct nothing and are taxed on $4,000. Neither state withheld anything, so there is no credit, and Idaho charges 5.3% on top.

This is general information rather than tax advice.
