Why won't DraftKings or FanDuel work on my phone in Washington?

The DraftKings and FanDuel apps are not working because you are not using them in the right place in Washington state.

DraftKings, FanDuel and other betting apps will not work on your phone in Seattle, as online sports betting is illegal in Washington.

DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM and Caesars all operate in Washington as tribal partners, inside specific buildings. None of them can take your bet anywhere else in the state, but when you are in their locations, their apps will work on your phone.

Washington law authorized the act of sports betting, not sports betting on the internet. This is the be-all and end-all in Washington.

How do I open a betting account in Washington?

You have to go to a tribal casino to open or create a betting account in Washington. You cannot sign up from your couch.

Washington is one of the few markets where remote registration is illegal. The process can be a touch complicated as well, but don't worry, we created a step-by-step list for you to follow along with:

1. Go to the sportsbook in person. There is no way around this step.
2. Bring valid photo ID. It must be federal, state or tribal government-issued. Staff will verify your identity against it in person.
3. Have proof of the following: your legal name; date of birth; Social Security number, or the last four digits; residential address; and email address and phone number.
4. Sign a current W-9. Have this completed at the counter.
5. Collect your player club account number. If you are just betting at the kiosk, this is the last step.
6. For the betting app, download it and open it. It will only work on their premises. Use your club account number to activate the sports betting app.
7. Play on their app. Once activated you can bet at your leisure, provided you are in the tribal casino.

What can I bet on in Washington?

The Gambling Commission and the tribal gaming agencies jointly built and maintain an Authorized Sports Wagering Menu, and a casino may only take a bet if the league, the organization and the wager type all appear on it.

Anything not on the menu is unavailable, regardless of whether it is legal elsewhere. Current markets for sports wagering in tribal casinos include:

The minor league ban is the one that surprises Washington fans most, because this is a strong minor league state. There is no legal wager available on the Tacoma Rainiers, the Everett AquaSox or the Spokane Indians at any Washington sportsbook.

Live in-play betting is available, and each casino must post the list of wagers it offers. Beyond the state-level menu, individual books apply their own house rules.

Employees are also barred from advising or encouraging you to place any particular wager, which is why staff at a Washington book will answer some questions but never offer you a pick if you ask them.

Can I bet on college sports in Washington?

Yes, you can bet on college sports in Washington. This is something that has changed recently, with the law changing on June 11, 2026. You still have to place the wager at a tribal casino, but you can now bet on the Huskies, Cougars or even Gonzaga Bulldogs.

For six years, Washington sportsbooks could not take a bet on a game involving a Washington college. That ended this summer.

While you can now bet on Washington colleges in person, you are not allowed to bet on player prop markets anywhere in the state. Wagers on the performance or non-performance of an individual athlete enrolled at a Washington institution are prohibited.

One more thing that Washington sports bettors need to know: the law permits these bets, but each tribe's casino still has to price up and offer these wagers. Availability at any specific casino may lag the law. Call the book before you make the trip for a Cougars line.

The Seahawks are the reigning Super Bowl champions and one of only two NFL teams to have played in both conferences. Seattle Mariners

Founded in 1977, the Mariners are the only MLB franchise never to reach a World Series, though the 2001 club tied the all-time record with 116 regular-season wins. 2026 marks the club's 50th season, commemorated with a uniform patch, and Randy Johnson's number 51 was retired at T-Mobile Park on May 2.

Seattle entered 2026 as an AL favorite and instead sits well below .500 and outside the playoff picture, with the offense near the bottom of the league in average, slugging and OPS. Raleigh's production has fallen off a cliff, Dan Wilson has spent the summer shuffling him down the order, and the manager's job is now openly in question heading into the final month.

NHL

Seattle Kraken

The Kraken joined the NHL in 2021 as the league's 32nd franchise and play at Climate Pledge Arena in the Uptown neighborhood. Their high point remains 2022–23, when they reached the playoffs in their second season and eliminated the defending champion Colorado Avalanche in the first round.

The rebuild is still in progress. Seattle finished 34–37–11 in 2025–26 under first-year head coach Lane Lambert, missing the playoffs for a third straight year and ranking near the bottom of the league in goals scored. The roster remains one of the youngest in the NHL.

Seattle Sounders

Founded in 2007 and playing since 2009, Seattle Sounders FC is one of the most successful clubs in MLS history, with two MLS Cups, four U.S. Open Cups and the 2022 Concacaf Champions League title, which made them the first MLS side to win the tournament. The Sounders play at Lumen Field and are coached by Brian Schmetzer, now in his tenth full season.

Washington Huskies

Washington is the state's flagship program, with claimed national titles in 1960 and 1991 and a run to the College Football Playoff final in 2023. The Huskies play at Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium in Seattle and are now in their third season in the Big Ten after more than a century in the Pac-12 and its predecessors.

Jedd Fisch took over in 2024 and has rebuilt quickly, improving from 6–7 in his first season to 9–4 and a bowl win in 2025. The Huskies open the 2026 season with the Apple Cup against Washington State.

Washington State plays at Martin Stadium in Pullman and spent two seasons as one half of the Pac-2 after the 2023 realignment, retaining the conference charter alongside Oregon State. The rebuilt Pac-12 begins play in 2026 with six new members joining the two holdovers.

The Cougars have won at least seven games in four of the last five seasons, including a 7–6 finish and a bowl win in 2025, but the coaching position has been unsettled. Kirby Moore was hired in December as the program's fourth head coach since 2020.

Gonzaga Bulldogs 

Gonzaga has reached 28

 consecutive NCAA Tournaments and played in the national championship game twice, in 2017 and 2021. Mark Few is entering his 28th season at the McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane, a 6,000-seat gym that remains one of the toughest venues in college basketball.

The Zags went 31–4 in 2025–26 to win the West Coast Conference regular season and tournament in their final year in the league, then exited the NCAA Tournament in the second round as a No. 3 seed. Gonzaga joins the reconstituted Pac-12 as a non-football member for 2026–27.

Which Washington tribal casino has a sportsbook?

Twenty-four of the 28 tribal casinos operating in Washington are approved for sports wagering, according to the Washington State Gambling Commission's own register.

We have listed them below for you, separating them out by region. We have also included the operating tribe, because the tribe determines the rules, markets, wager types, and the responsible gambling tools at each one.

Which Washington tribal casino has a national sportsbook partner?

National brands are available in Washington, but each tribe partners with one operator. The brand follows the casino and the tribe, and is not available anywhere else but the specific premises. These pairings are confirmed by the operators or the casinos themselves:

The remaining books are run in-house by the tribes themselves. Snoqualmie Casino & Hotel operates its own Snoqualmie Sportsbook, whose app was the first sportsbook app in Washington. It runs 12 sportsbook kiosks on the main casino floor around the clock and also accepts off-track horse wagering at them. ilani's sportsbook sits inside its stadium-style sports bar with counter service, 24-hour kiosks and an on-site bet builder.

What can I use to fund my Washington betting account?

Washington state law is very specific about what players can use to fund their account. The full list follows:

• Cash
• Cash equivalents
• A deposit of cash or vouchers at the sportsbook or another cashiering location
• Promotional credit
• Winnings

This means the cage and the kiosk do most of the work. Caesars Sportsbook at Muckleshoot, for example, directs players to deposit and withdraw at the sportsbook cashier cage or at a kiosk.

No credit is permitted. The betting laws bar any casino or sports betting operator from extending credit to any patron for gaming.

How are Washington betting winnings taxed?

Washington has no personal income tax, so a bet won at a Washington tribal casino generates no state income tax liability at all. There is no state return to file on it and no state withholding. The state side is the simplest in the country.

But keeping track of everything matters more in Washington than in online sports betting states, because there is no single app history to fall back on.

If you bet at three different casinos you have three separate account histories and three win/loss statements to request. Keep tickets. The W-9 you signed at registration means the book already has your Social Security number.

Unfortunately, things did change on the federal side, and they got worse for players in 2026.

What changed with sports betting taxes in 2026?

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed July 4, 2025, amended the Internal Revenue Code so that only 90 percent of wagering losses are deductible against winnings.

Losses remain capped at winnings and still cannot be carried forward.

The consequence is that a bettor can owe federal tax on a break-even year.

Things that you need to remember if you're sports betting in Washington

• You report gross winnings, not net profit. Every winning wager is income. The losses are a separate deduction, and they do not simply cancel out.

• You only get the loss deduction if you itemize. Most filers take the standard deduction, in which case the deduction is worth nothing and the entire $10,000 is taxable. The 90 percent rule only bites people who itemize; everyone else was already in the worse position.

• Compared with the neighbors. Nevada, like Washington, has no personal income tax. Oregon does. A Washingtonian who bets on the Oregon app is dealing with a state that taxes personal income, which is a question worth putting to a preparer before the season starts rather than in April.

Washington state responsible gambling tools

• Washington State Problem Gambling Helpline — 1-800-547-6133: 24/7 help, information, and confidential referrals to free or low-cost treatment in Washington by call, text, or chat.

• Evergreen Council on Problem Gambling: the nonprofit running Washington's helpline and problem gambling services across the Pacific Northwest, at evergreencpg.org.

• ECPG counselor directory: a location-based list of certified gambling counselors showing insurance accepted, languages spoken, and telehealth availability.

• Washington State Gambling Commission self-exclusion: voluntary self-exclusion covering licensed card rooms, at wsgc.wa.gov.

• Tribal casino self-exclusion: individual tribal properties operate their own self-exclusion and ban request programs, listed at washingtonindiangaming.org/watribescare.

Washington also runs a self-exclusion program, but it does not apply to the tribal casinos. If you wish to self-exclude from the tribal casinos you must do it in person and individually with them.

Every tribe operates its own program through its own gaming agency, and enrolling with one does not carry to another. Excluding yourself at Muckleshoot does not exclude you at Snoqualmie, Tulalip or ilani.

If self-exclusion is the tool you need, plan to contact each casino you have used and consider enrolling in the state card-room program at the same time, because that is a single form covering a large number of venues.

The state program, running since May 2022, excludes you from every licensed house-banked card room in Washington. You enroll with a single form, or one signed by a certified gambling counselor, with a passport-style photo and a copy of your photo ID, submitted by mail, in person at the Commission's Lacey headquarters, or at any card room.
